Thee We Adore, O Hidden Savior, Thee

Author: Thomas Aquinas (ca. 1225-1274); James Russell Woodford Hymnal: WSH1972 #599 (1972) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1 Thee we adore, O hidden Savior, thee, Who at this blessed feast art pleased to be; Both flesh and spirit in thy presence fail, Yet here thy presence we devoutly hail. 2 O blest memorial of our dying Lord, Who living Bread to men doth here afford! O may our souls forever feed on thee, And thou, O Christ, forever precious be! 3 Fountain of goodness, Jesus, Lord and God, Cleanse us, unclean, with thy most cleansing blood; Increase our faith and love, that we may know The hope and peace which from thy presence flow. 4 O Christ, whom now beneath a veil we see, May what we thirst for soon our portion be, To gaze on thee unveiled, and see thy face, The vision of thy glory and thy grace. Amen. Topics: Sacraments Lord's Supper; Other Observances World Communion Scripture: Acts 20:28 Tune Title: ADORO TE DEVOTE

There's a Wideness in God's Mercy

Author: Frederick W. Faber Hymnal: WSH1972 #601 (1972) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1 There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in his justice, Which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven; There is no place where earth's failings Have such kindly judgment given. 2 For the love of God is broader Than the measures of man's mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more simple, We should take him at his word; And our lives would be all sunshine In the sweetness of our Lord. Amen. Topics: Service for the Lord's Day After Confession and Pardon; Sacraments Lord's Supper; Acts of the Church The Marriage Service; Christian Year Lent Scripture: Psalm 103:17 Tune Title: IN BABILONE

This Is My Father's World

Author: Maltbie D. Babcock Hymnal: WSH1972 #602 (1972) Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 This is my Father's world, And to my listening ears All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres. This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand the wonders wrought. 2 This is my Father's world: The birds their carols raise, The morning light, the lily white, Declare their maker's praise. This is my Father's world: He shines in all that's fair; In the rustling grass I hear him pass, He speaks to me everywhere. 3 This is my Father's world: Oh, let me ne'er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father's world: The battle is not done; Jesus who died shall be satisfied, And earth and heaven be one. Amen. Throned Upon the Awful Tree

Author: John Ellerton Hymnal: WSH1972 #605 (1972) Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Lyrics: 1 Throned upon the awful tree, Lamb of God, your grief we see. Darkness veils your anguished face; None its lines of woe can trace. None can tell what pangs unknown Hold you silent and alone— 2 Silent through those three dread hours, Wrestling with the evil powers, Left alone with human sin, Gloom around you and within, Till th'appointed time is nigh, Till the Lamb of God may die. 3 Hark, that cry that peals aloud Upward through the whelming cloud! You, the Father's only Son, You, his own anointed One, You are asking— can it be?— "Why have you forsaken me?" 4 Lord, should fear and anguish roll Darkly o'er our sinful soul, You, who once were thus bereft That your own might ne'er be left, Teach us by that bitter cry In the gloom to know you nigh. Amen. Topics: Sacraments Lord's Supper; Christian Year Lent; Christian Year Good Friday Scripture: Mark 15:34 Tune Title: ARFON

To Abraham the Promise Came

Hymnal: WSH1972 #608 (1972) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1 To Abraham the promise came, And to his seed for ever, A light to shine in Isaac's line, By scripture we discover; Hail, promised morn! the Savior's born, he glorious Mediator— God's blessed Word made flesh and blood, Assumed the human nature. 2 His parents poor in earthly store, To entertain the stranger They found no bed to lay his head, But in the ox's manger: No royal things, as used by kings, Were seen by those that found him, But in the hay the stranger lay, With swaddling bands around him. 3 On the same night a glorious light To shepherds there appeared, Bright angels came in shining flame, They saw and greatly feared. The angels said, "Be not afraid, Although we much alarm you, We do appear good news to bear, As now we will inform you. 4 "The city's name is Bethlehem, In which God hath appointed, This glorious morn a Savior's born, For him God hath anointed; By this you'll know, if you will go, To see this little stranger, His lovely charms in Mary's arms, Both lying in a manger." 5 When this was said, straightway was made A glorious sound from heaven: Each flaming tongue an anthem sung, "To men a Savior's given, In Jesus' name, the glorious theme, We elevate our voices, At Jesus' birth be peace on earth, Meanwhile all heaven rejoices." 7. Then with delight they took their flight, and winged their way to glory, The shepherds gazed and were amazed, to hear the pleasing story; To Bethlehem they quickly came, the glorious news to carry, And in the stall they found them all, Joseph, the Babe, and Mary. 8. The shepherds then returned again to their own habitation, With joy of heart they did depart, now they have found salvation. Glory, they cry, to God on high, who sent his Son to save us This glorious morn the Savior's born, his name it is Christ Jesus.
