Troubled, but making God a Refuge

Author: Steele Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CCCXVI (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Christian Troubled, but making God his refuge; Troubled but making God our refuge First Line: Dear refuge of my weary soul Lyrics: 1 Dear refuge of my weary soul, On thee, when sorrows rise, On thee, when waves of trouble roll, My fainting hope relies. 2 To thee I tell each rising grief, For thou alone canst heal; Thy word can bring a sweet relief For every pain I feel. 3 But O! when gloomy doubts prevail, I fear to call thee mine; The springs of comfort seem to fail, And all my hopes decline. 4 Yet, gracious GOD, where shall I flee? Thou art my only trust; And still my soul would cleave to thee, Tho prostrate in the dust. 5 Hast thou not bid me seek thy face? And shall I seek in vain? And can the ear of sovereign grace Be deaf when I complain? 6 No, still the ear of sovereign grace Attends the mourner's prayer; O may I ever find access To breathe my sorrows there! 7 Thy mercy seat is open still; Here let my soul retreat; With humble hope attend thy will, And wait beneath thy feet. Psalm 46 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.104 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: God our refuge in national troubles First Line: God is the refuge of his saints Lyrics: God is the refuge of his saints, When storms of sharp distress invade Ere we can offer our complaints, Behold him present with his aid. Let mountains from their seats be hurled Down to the deep, and buried there, Convulsions shake the solid world, Our faith shall never yield to fear. Loud may the troubled ocean roar, In sacred peace our souls abide, While every nation, every shore, Trembles, and dreads the swelling tide. There is a stream, whose gentle flow Supplies the city of our God; Life, love, and joy still gliding through, And wat'ring our divine abode. That sacred stream, thine holy word, That all our raging fear controls: Sweet peace thy promises afford, And give new strength to fainting souls. Zion enjoys her Monarch's love, Secure against a threat'ning hour; Nor can her firm foundations move, Built on his truth, and armed with power. Scripture: Psalm 46 Languages: English
