L. C. Everett

1818 - 1867 Composer of "[Abide with me, fast falls the eventide]" in Twilight Zephyrs L. C. Everett's largest and most popular collection was The Wesleyan Hymn and Tune Book (1859), published by the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The denominational dedication page in that collection says it was "prepared by Mr. L.C. Everett, of Virginia, a gentleman well-known through the South and Southwest, as an author and teacher of sacred vocal music." In his own introductory remarks, Everett's instincts as an educator are clear. He advised churches to offer a weekly congregational singing class "for the purpose of meeting together frequently, say one evening each week, to practice the tunes under the direction of a suitably qualified chorister or leader, and ... that the entire congregation be invited to attend the rehearsals of the class and join in learning the tunes." For Everett, musical worship was not just the duty of a choir, it was the duty of everyone. Leonard’s brothers were Asa Brooks Everett (1828-1875), N.E. Everett, & Benjamin Holden Everett. Leonard and Asa developed a successful music education system called "The Everett System," and together with R.M. McIntosh they formed the L.C. Everett Company, which employed approximately fifty music teachers throughout the American south and middle Atlantic. —Chris Fenner see also J.H. Louis D. Eichhorn

1874 - 1927 Composer of "[Abide with me, fast falls the eventide]" in Quartets and Choruses for Men Born: 1874, Indiana. Buried: Hillside Memorial Park, Redlands, California. Eichhorn was living in Creek, Indiana, by 1880. He and his wife Edna were in Denver, Colorado, by 1910, and in Redlands, California, by 1920. Albert J. Holden

1841 - 1916 Person Name: A. J. H. Composer of "[Abide with me: fast falls the eventide]" in Songs of Faith, Hope, and Love A Founder of the American Guild of Organists and composer and editor of numerous pieces and collections of sacred music (of which perhaps Songs of Faith, Hope and Love, 1883, is best known), Albert Junos Holden was born in Boston on August 17, 1841. He studied in New York City, and served there as organist of the Church of the Divine Paternity (Universalist) and of the Church of the Puritans (Presbyterian). His sacred solo "In Heavenly Love Abiding" was recorded by the "Metropolitan Quartet" on an Edison Blue Amberol cylinder, No. 3813, in 1919. He died in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, on July 16, 1916. George Edward Martin

b. 1851 Composer of "[Abide with me! Fast falls the eventide]" in Six Hymns George Edward Martin – Martin left his charge in St. Louis, MO, in 1898. For two years following he was pastor of the Holland Memorial Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and then spent a year and a half in rest and travel. He was installed pastor of the Kirk Street congregational Church in Lowell, Mass., March 3, 1902. He received the degree of D.D. from Wabash College in 1895, and also from Park College, MO. He is the author of “Sermons and Sermon Rhymes,” and “Sunday Songs for Little Children,” and has given much time and study to the writing of hymns and tunes for children.
