Clara H. Scott

1841 - 1897 Person Name: C. H. S. Composer of "[Out of Egypt, called by Thee]" in Truth in Song Clara Harriett Fiske Jones Scott USA 1841-1897. Born at Elk Grove, IL, daughter of a farmer, the family moved to Chicago in 1856. Clara enrolled in the first Chicago Musical Institute, after founders, Chauncy M Cady and William Bradbury, opened it in 1858. Following her graduation from the program, she found employment at the new Lyons Girl’s Seminary (also founded in 1858) in Lyons, IA. While working there, she met Henry Clay Scott, who worked for Scott & Ovington Brothers wholesale crockery company. The two married in 1861 in McGregor, IA. They had two daughters, Medora and Mary. The family moved to Austin, IL, near Chicago in the 1870s. She become a composer, hymnwriter, and publisher. She was the first woman to publish a volume of anthems, ‘The Royal anthem book’ in 1882. Horatio Palmer, a friend, helped her publish her songs. She issued three collections of songs. In 1895 she and her husband, now an invalid, moved to Chicago. In 1897 she was returning to her friend’s house after attending a funeral in DuBuque, IA. She was driving a horse-drawn buggy with two friends, Martha Hay and D D Myers. The buggy’s hold-back strap snapped, spooking the horse, who raced forward, colliding with a coping stone, causing the buggy to roll. Clara and Martha were thrown out and both died instantly. The third lady, D D, was severly injured. Clara’s funeral was well-attended by music writers, teachers, professors, publishers, and friends. Two of her own compositions were sung by a quartet of close friends. She died at Dubuque, IA. John Perry

Used by permission. ============================ Elisabeth Burrowes is a resident of Berkeley, California, formerly of Englewood, New Jersey. She is the mother of five children, has a number of grandchildren, is the author of two books and numerous poems. Her hymn "God of the ages by whose hand", published by the Hymn Society of America in 1958, will appear in the forthcoming new edition of The Methodist Hymnal. Mrs. Burrowes, an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church, has recently affiliated with The South Berkeley Community Church, an inter-racial Church which is doing a deeply dedicated and inspiring work. Mrs. Burrowes wrote the Anniversary Hymn, "Almighty God, we pray thee still to guide us", for its celebration in 1964. Her married name is Mrs. Paul deNyse Burrowes. She is also the author of one of the Children's Hymns recently published by the Hymn Society entitled "Our Father, who dost lead us." --Ten New Hymns on the Ministry, 1966. Used by permission.

Henry Robert Gadsby

1842 - 1907 Person Name: H. Gadsby Arranger of "[Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us] (Gadsby)" in The Church Hymnal Born: December 15, 1840, Hackney, England. Though many sources show his birth year as 1842, census entries indicate an 1840 birth. Died: November 11, 1907, Putney, England. Buried: Putney Vale Cemetery. Gadsby was a chorister at St. Paul’s Cathedral (1849-58), and organist at St. Peter’s, Brockley, until 1884, when he succeeded John Hullah at Queen’s College, Harley Street, London. b. 1944 Person Name: Carl P. Daw, Jr. (b. 1944) Author of "Christ our Passover (Pascha nostrum) (metrical paraphrase)" in Wonder, Love, and Praise Carl P. Daw, Jr. (b. Louisville, KY, 1944) is the son of a Baptist minister. He holds a PhD degree in English (University of Virginia) and taught English from 1970-1979 at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. As an Episcopal priest (MDiv, 1981, University of the South, Sewanee, Tennesee) he served several congregations in Virginia, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. From 1996-2009 he served as the Executive Director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Carl Daw began to write hymns as a consultant member of the Text committee for The Hymnal 1982, and his many texts often appeared first in several small collections, including A Year of Grace: Hymns for the Church Year (1990); To Sing God’s Praise (1992), New Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1996), Gathered for Worship (2006). Other publications include A Hymntune Psalter (2 volumes, 1988-1989) and Breaking the Word: Essays on the Liturgical Dimensions of Preaching (1994, for which he served as editor and contributed two essays. In 2002 a collection of 25 of his hymns in Japanese was published by the United Church of Christ in Japan.
