A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546 Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Appears in 30 hymnals Topics: Burial Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; He helps us free from ev'ry need That hath us now o'ertaken. The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. 2 With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the valiant One, Whom God himself elected. Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is, Of sabaoth Lord, And there's none other God; He holds the field forever. 3 Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us, We tremble not, we fear no ill, They shall not overpow'r us. This world's prince may still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none, He's judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him. 4 The Word they still shall let remain Nor any thanks have for it; He's by our side upon the plain With his good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife, Though these all be gone, Our vict'ry has been won; The Kingdom ours remaineth. Used With Tune: EIN FESTE BURG Text Sources: Tr. composite

O what the joy and the glory must be

Author: P. Abelard; J. M. Neale Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 138 hymnals Topics: Burial of the Dead; Burial of the Dead Lyrics: 1 Oh, what the joy and the glory must be, Those endless Sabbaths the blessèd ones see! Crown for the valiant, to weary ones rest; God shall be all, and in all ever blest. 2 What are the Monarch, His court, and His throne? What are the peace and the joy that they own? Oh, that the blest ones, who in it have share, All that they feel could as fully declare! 3 Truly Jerusalem name we that shore, Vision of peace, that brings joy evermore; Wish and fulfillment can severed be ne'er, Nor the thing prayed for come short of the prayer. 4 There, where no troubles distraction can bring, We the sweet anthems of Sion shall sing; While for thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise Thy blessèd people eternally raise. 5 There dawns no Sabbath, no Sabbath is o'er, Those Sabbath-keepers have one evermore; One and unending is that triumph-song Which to the angels and us shall belong. 6 Now, in the meanwhile, with hearts raised on high, We for that country must yearn and must sigh; Seeking Jerusalem, dear native land, Through our long exile on Babylon's strand. 7 Low before Him with our praises we fall, Of Whom, and in Whom, and through Whom are all; Of Whom, the Father; and in Whom, the Son; Through Whom, the Spirit, with Them ever One. Amen. Used With Tune: O QUANTA QUALIA

Hark! hark, my soul! Angelic songs are swelling

Author: Frederick W. Faber Meter: 11.10.11.10.9.11 Appears in 625 hymnals Topics: Burial of the Dead Lyrics: Hark! hark, my soul! Angelic songs are swelling O'er earth's green fields and ocean's wave-beat shore; How sweet the truth those blessèd strains are telling Of that new life when sin shall be no more! Angels of Jesus, angels of light, Singing to welcome the pilgrims of the night. Onward we go, for still we hear them singing, "Come, weary souls, for Jesus bids you come"; And through the dark, its echoes sweetly ringing, The music of the Gospel leads us home. Far, far away, like bells at evening pealing, The voice of Jesus sounds o'er land and sea, And laden souls by thousands meekly stealing, Kind Shepherd, turn their weary steps to thee. Rest comes at length, though life be long and dreary, The day must dawn, and darksome night be past; Faith's journeys end in welcome to the weary, And heaven, the heart's true home, will come at last. Angels, sing out your faithful watches keeping; Sing us sweet fragments of the songs above; Till morning's joy shall end the night of weeping, And life's long shadows break in cloudless love. Used With Tune: PILGRIMS

I would not live alway; I ask not to stay

Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 702 hymnals Topics: Death and Burial Lyrics: 1 I would not live alway; I ask not to stay Where storm after storm rises dark o'er the way: The few lurid mornings that dawn on us here Are enough for life's woes, full enough for its cheer. 2 I would not live alway; thus fettered by sin, Temptation without and corruption within: E'en the rapture of pardon is mingled with fears, And the cup of thanksgiving with penitent tears. 3 I would not live alway; no, welcome the tomb; Since Jesus hath lain there, I dread not its gloom: There sweet be my rest till He bid me arise To hail Him in triumph descending the skies. 4 Who, who would live alway, away from his God? Away from yon heaven, that blissful abode, Where the rivers of pleasure flow o'er the bright plains, And the noontide of glory eternally reigns: 5 Where the saints of all ages in harmony meet, Their Savior and brethren transported to greet, While the anthems of rapture unceasingly roll, And the smile of the Lord is the feast of the soul?
