Strait is the Way, the Door is strait

Appears in 115 hymnals Topics: Vain Prosperity Lyrics: 1 Strait is the Way, the Door is strait, That leads to Joys on high; 'Tis but a few that find the Gate, While Crowds mistake and die. 2 Beloved Self must be deny'd, The Mind and Will renew'd Passion suppress'd, and Patience try'd, And vain Desires subdu'd. 3 Flesh is a dang'rous Foe to Grace, Where it prevails and rules; Flesh must be humbled, Pride abas'd, Lest they destroy our Souls. 4 The Love of Gold be banish'd hence, (That vile Idolatry) And ev'ry Member, ev'ry Sense, In sweet Subjection lie. 5 The Tongue, that most unruly Pow'r, Requires a strong Restraint: We must be watchful ev'ry Hour, And pray, but never faint. 6 Lord! can a feeble, helpless Worm Fulfil a Task so hard? Thy Grace must all my Work perform, And give the free Reward.

The seed by Thee provided Is sown o'er hill and plain, And Thou with gentle showers Dost bless the springing grain. 3 The year with good Thou crownest, The earth Thy mercy fills, The wilderness is fruitful, And joyful are the hills; With corn the vales are covered, The flocks in pastures graze; All nature joins in singing A joyful song of praise. Psalm 73 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 25 hymnals Topics: Prosperous sinners cursed; Prosperity dangerous First Line: Now I'm convinced the Lord is kind Lyrics: Now I'm convinced the Lord is kind To men of heart sincere; Yet once my foolish thoughts repined, And bordered on despair. I grieved to see the wicked thrive, And spoke with angry breath, "How pleasant and profane they live! How peaceful is their death! "With well-fed flesh and haughty eyes, They lay their fears to sleep; Against the heav'ns their slanders rise, While saints in silence weep. "In vain I lift my hands to pray, And cleanse my heart in vain; For I am chastened all the day, The night renews my pain." Yet while my tongue indulged complaints, I felt my heart reprove,- "Sure I shall thus offend thy saints, And grieve the men I love." But still I found my doubts too hard, The conflict too severe, Till I retired to search thy word, And learn thy secrets there. There, as in some prophetic glass, I saw the sinner's feet High mounted on a slipp'ry place, Beside a fiery pit. I heard the wretch profanely boast, Till at thy frown he fell; His honors in a dream were lost, And he awakes in hell. Lord, what an envious fool I was! How like a thoughtless beast! Thus to suspect thy promised grace, And think the wicked blest. Yet I was kept from full despair, Upheld by power unknown; That blessed hand that broke the snare Shall guide me to thy throne. Scripture: Psalm 73

The Way and End of the Righteous and the Wicked

Appears in 80 hymnals Topics: Prosperous sinners cursed; Prosperous sinners cursed First Line: My God, the steps of pious men Lyrics: 1 My God, the steps of pious men Are order'd by thy will: Though they should fall, they rise again, Thy Hand supports them still. 2 The Lord delights to see their ways, Their virtue he approves: He'll ne'er deprive them of his grace, Nor leave the men he loves. 3 The heavenly heritage is theirs, Their portion and their home; He feasts them now, and makes them heirs Of blessings long to come. 4 Wait on the Lord, ye sons of men, Nor fear when tyrants frown; Ye shall confess their pride was vain, When justice casts them down. Pause. 5 The haughty sinner have I seen Nor fearing man nor God, Like a tall bay-tree, fair and green, Spreading his arms abroad: 6 And lo, he vanish'd from the ground, Destroy'd by hands unseen; Nor root, nor branch, nor leaf was found Where all that pride had been. 7 But mark the man of righteousness, His several steps attend; True pleasure runs thro' all his ways, And peaceful is his end. Scripture: Psalm 37:23-37
