How Truly Blest Are They

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 117 hymnals Topics: Ten Commandments 3rd Commandment (Remember the Sabbath) Lyrics: 1 How truly blest are they who shun the sinners' ways, among their counsels never stand, nor take the scorners' place, 2 But make the law of God their study and delight amid the labors of the day and watches of the night. 3 He like a tree shall thrive with waters near the root. Fresh as the leaf their name shall live; their works are heav'nly fruit. 4 The wicked are not so! They no such blessing find. Their hopes shall flee like empty chaff before the driving wind. 5 How will they bear to stand before that judgment seat where all the saints at Christ's right hand in full assembly meet? 6 God knows and he approves the way the righteous go, but sinners and their works shall meet a dreadful overthrow. Scripture: Psalm 1 Used With Tune: ST. MICHAEL

God's Glory Fills the Heavens

Author: Carl P. Daw Jr. Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: Ten Commandments 9th and 10th Commandments (You shall not covet) First Line: God's glory fills the heav'ns with hymns Lyrics: 1 God’s glory fills the heav’ns with hymns; the domed sky bears the maker’s mark. New praises sound from day to day and echo through the knowing dark. Without a word their songs roll on; into all lands their voices run. And with a champion’s strength and grace from farthest heav'n comes forth the sun. 2 God’s perfect law revives the soul; its precepts make the simple wise. Its just commands rejoice the heart; its truth gives light unto the eyes. Forever shall this law endure: unblemished, righteous, true, complete. No gold was ever found so fine, no honey in the comb more sweet. 3 God’s servant may I ever be: this world my joy, that Word my guide. O cleanse me, LORD, from secret sin; deliver me from selfish pride. Accept my thoughts and words and deeds; let them find favor in your sight. For you alone can make me whole, O LORD, my refuge and my might. Scripture: Psalm 19 Used With Tune: CREATION

Now with Joyful Exultation

Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 15 hymnals Topics: Ten Commandments 2nd Commandment (do not make graven emages) Lyrics: 1 Now with joyful exultation let us sing to God our praise; to the Rock of our salvation loud hosannas let us raise. Thankful tribute gladly bringing, let us come before him now, and, with psalms his praises singing, joyful in his presence bow. 2 For how great a God, and glorious, is the LORD of whom we sing; over idol gods victorious, great is he, our God and King. In his hand are earth's deep places, also his are all the hills; his the sea whose bounds he traces, his the land his bounty fills. 3 To the LORD, such might revealing, let us come with reverence meet, and, before our Maker kneeling, let us worship at his feet. He is our own God who leads us, we the people of his care; with a shepherd's hand he feeds us as his flock in pastures fair. 4 While he offers peace and pardon let us hear his voice today, lest, if we our hearts should harden, we should perish in the way-- lest to us, so unbelieving, he in judgment should declare: "You, so long my Spirit grieving, never in my rest will share." Scripture: Psalm 95 Used With Tune: BEECHER Text Sources: Psalter, 1912

With Grateful Heart My Thanks I Bring

Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 with repeat Appears in 15 hymnals Topics: Ten Commandments 3rd Commandment (do not take the name of the Lord in vain) Lyrics: 1 With grateful heart my thanks I bring; before the "gods" your praise I sing. I worship in your holy place and praise you for your truth and grace; for truth and grace together shine in your most holy Word divine, in your most holy Word divine. 2 I cried to you, and you did save; your word of grace new courage gave. The kings of earth shall thank you, LORD, for they have heard your wondrous word; yes, they shall come with songs of praise for great and glorious are your ways, for great and glorious are your ways. 3 O LORD, enthroned in glory bright, you reign alone in heavenly height; the proud in vain your favor seek, but you have mercy for the meek. Through trouble though my pathway be, you will revive and strengthen me, you will revive and strengthen me. 4 You will stretch forth your mighty arm to save me when my foes alarm. The work you have for me begun shall by your grace be fully done. Your love forever will endure: your mercy, LORD, is ever sure; your mercy, LORD, is ever sure. Scripture: Psalm 138 Used With Tune: SOLID ROCK Text Sources: Psalter, 1912, alt.

Judges Who Rule the World by Laws

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 54 hymnals Topics: Ten Commandments 8th Commandment (You shall not give false witness) Lyrics: 1 Judges, who rule the world by laws, will you despise the righteous cause, when in your court poor victims stand? Dare you condemn the righteous poor, and let rich crooks escape secure, while gold and greatness bribe your hand? 2 Have you forgot, or never knew that God will judge the judges too? High in the heav'ns his justice reigns; yet you invade the rights of God and send your bold decrees abroad, to bind the conscience in your chains. 3 A poisoned arrow is your tongue, the arrow sharp, the poison strong, and death attends where'er it wounds: you hear no counsels, cries, or tears, just as the cobra stops her ears against the pow'r of charming sounds. 4 Break out their teeth, eternal God— those teeth of lions dyed in blood— and crush the serpents in the dust: as empty chaff when whirlwinds rise before the sweeping tempest flies, so let their hopes and names be lost. 5 Th' Almighty thunders from the sky, their grandeur melts, their titles die, as hills of snow dissolve and run, or snails that perish in their slime, or births that come before their time, vain births, that never see the sun. 6 Thus shall the vengeance of the LORD true peace and joy to saints afford, and all that hear shall join and say, "There is a God who rules on high, a God who hears his children cry, and will their suff'rings well repay." Scripture: Psalm 58 Used With Tune: OLD 113TH
