Arthur Hutchings

1906 - 1989 Person Name: Arthur Hutchings, b. 1906 Hymnal Number: 120 Harmonizer of "SOLEMNIS HAEC FESTIVITAS" in The Hymnal 1982 Arthur James Bramwell Hutchings (1906–1989) was an English musicologist, composer, and professor of music at the University of Durham, England. He wrote extensively on topics as varied as nineteenth-century English liturgical composition, Schubert, Purcell, Edmund Rubbra, and baroque concertos; but his most famous book was the Companion to Mozart's Piano Concertos, published in 1948 and often reissued since. Among his other books are The Invention and Composition of Music and Church Music in the Nineteenth Century. During the late 1970s his articles on music regularly appeared in the monthly magazine Records and Recording. His compositions include the Seasonal Preludes for organ, the overture Oriana Triumphans, the opera Marriage à la Mode, and the operetta The Plumber's Arms. Among his choral works are Hosanna to the Son of David, God is Gone Up, Grant Them Rest, and the Communion Service on Russian Themes. Geoffrey Anketel Studdert Kennedy

1883 - 1929 Person Name: Geoffrey Anketel Suddert-Kennedy, 1883-1929 Hymnal Number: 9 Author of "Not here for high and holy things" in The Hymnal 1982 Born with Irish heritage to the vicarage in a deprived parish in Leeds. Studdert Kennedy got into Trinity College Dublin at the age of 14, though poverty meant he did not attend until later, graduating with a First Class degree. He was a popular teacher at Calday Grange Grammar School on the Wirral Peninsula before entering the Anglican Ministry; ordained in Worcester Cathedral in 1908 and married in 1914. He worked in deprived parishes: in Rugby, with his Father in Leeds and St Paul's in Worcester. He was known for his forgetfulness, his generosity (he famously gave away the marital bed to an old lady in need recruiting his wife to help carry the mattress) and his plain speaking. He became a military chaplain (AKA the Padre) in 1915. He spent time with the men waiting to go to the Front speaking with them and offering to write letters home. He carried a large canvas sack of New Testaments and Woodbine Cigarettes to distribute, often staying on the trains up to the front well after they had left the station earning great popularity and the affectionate nickname Woodbine Willie. In 1917 he was awarded the Military Cross for fetching morphine for a first aid post on the Front while under bombardment and repeatedly going to help the wounded or bury the dead in No Man's Land. During the war his first collection of poetry "Rough Rhymes of a Padre" was published and he achieved widespread national fame. His poems did not shy from the horrors of war or questions of faith raised. He was always on the side of the 'ordinary man'. After the war he continued in parish ministry before taking an itinerant role with the Industrial Christian Fellowship (still operating) where he proclaimed the gospel and fought for the disadvantaged. He died in Liverpool 1929 intending to keep a commitment despite exhaustion. His memorial in Worcester Cathedral says "A poet: a prophet: a passionate seeker after truth: an ardent advocate of Christian fellowship." Sedulius

400 - 499 Person Name: Caelius Sedulius, 5th cent. Hymnal Number: 132 Author of "When Christ's appearing was made known" in The Hymnal 1982 Sedulius, Coelius. The known facts concerning this poet, as contained in his two letters to Macedonius, are, that in early life, he devoted himself to heathen literature; that comparatively late in life he was converted to Christianity; and that amongst his friends were Gallieanus and Perpetua. The place of his birth is generally believed to have been Rome; and the date when he flourished 450. For this date the evidence is, that he referred to the Commentaries of Jerome, who died 420; is praised by Cassiodorus, who d. 575, and by Gelasius, who was pope from 492 to 496. His works were collected, after his death, by Asterius, who was consul in 494. They are (1) Carmen Paschale, a poem which treats of the whole Gospel story; (2) Opus Paschale, a prose rendering of the former; (3) Elegia, a poem, of 110 lines, on the same subject as the Carmen; (4) Veteris et Novi Testamenti Collatio; and (5) the hymn, "A solis ortus cardine". Areval(1794) quotes 16 manuscripts of Sedulius's work, ranging in date from the 7th to the 16th century. The best edition of his Opera is that by Dr. J. Huemer, pulished. at Vienna in 1885. Areval's text is printed in Migne's Patrology: Series Latina vol. xix. Carol Ann Doran

1936 - 2023 Person Name: Carol Doran, b. 1936 Hymnal Number: 131 Harmonizer of "VON HIMMEL KAM DER ENGEL SCHAR" in The Hymnal 1982 Carol Doran was a musician, author, scholar, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also a woman of unwavering faith, integrity, kindness, curiosity, beauty, good humor, and fearlessness who inspired those she loved and who loved her so much in return. Carol’s early exposure to the study of music became a lifelong passion and professional dedication as she went on to earn a Doctor of Music Arts degree in Church Music and Organ at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Dr. Doran taught and was a professor of Music and Liturgy at Colgate Rochester Divinity School/Bexley Hall in Rochester, New York; Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia; the School of Theology at Boston University; Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA, and many others. Additionally, she served with distinction on the boards of many professional organizations of musicians and liturgists. Carol published numerous articles on church music and worship and collaborated with the Rev. Dr. Thomas H. Troeger in the publication of four books, including two hymnals published by Oxford University Press. Carol and Michael Doran were married for more than 59 years, the majority of which were spent in Rochester, NY where they raised their four children: Charles, Julia, Ellen, and Elizabeth. Carol cared deeply about her family, and she extended that joyful compassion to friends, associates, and every person that she encountered in her life. Carol celebrated the lives that her children and their families were living and showed her love in a million different ways throughout her life. When she saw you, whether to say hello or goodbye, she proclaimed her love with a warm, lingering handshake or hug; her loving kindness in her eyes and in the smile you could trust and take as the gift she gave you. Above all, she was devoted to her husband, Michael, and he to her. Carol is survived by her loving husband, Michael of North Andover, MA; sister Ellen Buerklin of Chester, PA; brother Norman (& Patty) Maynard, MA; son Charles (& Cara) Ipswich, MA.; daughters Julia Chambers (& Eddy) Escondido, CA; Ellen Bzomowski (& Steve) Plainfield, MA; Elizabeth Evenson (& Paul) Arlington, MA; and nine grandchildren: Zoe, Lucas, Alexander, Ava, Kyle, Theo, Valerie, Kira, and Elias. L. Tuttiett

1825 - 1897 Person Name: Laurence Tuttiett, 1825-1895 Hymnal Number: 563 Author of "Go forward, Christian soldier" in The Hymnal 1982 Laurence Tuttiett was born at Colyton, Devon, in 1825; was educated at Christ Hospital, and at King's College, London; ordained Deacon, 1848, Priest, 1849; entered upon the living of Lea Marston, Coleshill, 1854, and subsequently was appointed Curate of S. Paul's, Knightsbridge, London. He is the author of several volumes and tracts. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872. ================== Tuttiett, Lawrence, son of John Tuttiett, surgeon in the R.N., was born at Cloyton, Devonshire, in 1825, and educated at Christ's Hospital, and King's College, London. It was originally purposed that he should follow the medical profession, but, abandoning it for the ministry, he took Holy Orders in 1848. In 1854 he became vicar of Lea Marston, Warwickshire; and in 1870 incumbent of the Episcopal Church of St. Andrews, Scotland. He was also preferred to a prebendaryship in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Perth, in 1880. He is the author of several manuals of prayers, published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and other prose works, and also of:— (1) Hymns for Churchmen, 1854; (2) Counsels of a Godfather, 1861; (3) Hymns for the Children of the Church, 1862; (4) Germs of Thought on the Sunday Services, 1864; (5) Through the Clouds; Thoughts in Plain Verse, 1866. Mr. Tuttiett's hymns are characterised by smoothness of rhythm, directness of aim, simplicity of language, and deep earnestness. Those for special services and seasons are of great merit. Max Landsberg

1845 - 1927 Person Name: Max Landsberg, 1845-1928 Hymnal Number: 372 Translator of "Praise to the living God" in The Hymnal 1982 Max Landsberg was born in Berlin as the eldest son of a long-established Jewish family, shortly before his father, Meyer Landsberg, in Hildesheim took a job as a rabbi. First, Landsberg was privately educated, but then went to the high school Josephinum in Hildesheim . After graduation he studied in Göttingen, Breslau and Berlin. The training to become a rabbi he received from Lazarus eagle at the University of Kassel, Samuel Ephraim Meyer at the University of Hanover and of Abraham Geiger in Wroclaw. On 7 November 1866 he was codd at the University of Halle with his work Vita sultani Muradi "a Mohammed Amyn Mohibby, e. Mss. Bibliothecae regiae Berolinensis, addita versione latina atque adjectis adnotationibus Dr. phil. Doctorate. Since 1866, he was pin Rabbi and teachers at the seminar for Jewish teachers in Hanover. rabbi he was to his Semicha 1870. Shortly before his departure to the U.S. married Landsberg on 26 February 1871 in Hanover Miriam Isengarten (* 1847, † April 16, 1912 in Baltimore) In the fall of 1869, as in 1848 decided orthodox founded community in Rochester, hire a rabbi who could preach both in German and in English and should be a "gentleman of advanced ideas and reformed religious views". This quote is an excerpt from the ad for the position of rabbi in Rochester in the weekly magazine "The American Israelite", the public forum of the American Reform Judaism. After they found no suitable person in the country, they turned to Abraham Geiger, a pioneer of Reform Judaism in Europe. Geiger encouraged his former students to apply to this job. Because of its application in December 1870 Landsberg was invited and settled for Passover 1871 (early April 1871) to Rochester. By 1915, he stayed on as chief rabbi. What the liturgical reforms were concerned in the community, so Landsberg based on that of David Einhorn in 1858 published prayer book Olat Tamid. It contained the majority of prayers in German and was printed according to and read from left to right. However, there were already 10 days after launch on 27th April 1873 in the town of B'rith Kodesh to controversy. Then the parish council withdrew this prayer book and replaced it with a more tradition-setting, but also reforming the liturgy, which from Temple Emanu El was published in New York City. Despite the shortcomings Landsberg used this prayer book over a decade. On the other hand, it prompted him to contribute their own ideas of liturgical revision. The result was that in 1880, along with Sol[omon] Wile (1853-1931) published book Hymn Book for Jewish Worship. For two-thirds of it contained English-language songs, and the remaining were in German. Sol Wile at the time was president of the Temple B'rith Kodesh and in his preface to the hymnal, which was more intended for the community, as for the rabbi and the choir, he wrote that he is a "inbrünstigeren" of these songs worship hoped. But only the ritual prayer book for Jewish Worship by Max Landsberg itself, introduced in 1884, the community took to the center of the radical Jewish reform movement. It was the result of Landsberg efforts, in accordance with the ideas of community members to create a new liturgy, which "conform to the sentiments of the living generation" was. Landsberg not only received praise, but also harsh criticism, including by Isaac Mayer Wise. Even in our own community Landsberg faced a opposition, but this did not change in a takeover of the liturgy. It Landsberg, despite all the criticism has managed to create a completely appropriate in the English language and the Reform movement liturgy. An outstanding event for Max Landsberg in 1895 was the focus of the annual meeting of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). He himself was in this movement since its founding in 1889 active. At this meeting there was a full agreement in the views of Isaac Mayer Wise and Landsberg that the greatest achievements of American Reform Judaism was to have freed the Jews from the ceremonial constraints. Another special feature of this period was the increased involvement of women in the community and especially in community work. There were just the women who took part in the worship and wanted to have more influence on the fortunes of the community. Here, Max Landsberg did show, by advocating openly for the rights of women. In his essay The Position of Women Among the Jews he grappled with the theological implications of women's emancipation. But Max Landsberg himself alienated since that time increasingly of the community. Maybe because it a lifelong Office guidance was issued never, but he had to extend from the council's term of office again and again. Already in July 1910, adjusted for the community Horace J. Wolf as an assistant. His contract was also extended several times. They tried to limit Landsberg's influence on the community. Particularly hard hit Landsberg his wife Miriam's death in 1912. This event was marked by bitterness his last years, so it took every joy of life. When, in March 1913, a committee at Landsberg "the lack of interest in the religious life of the congregation" found and published recommendations in October, Max Landsberg offered his resignation. Well with regard to the posted position of Landsberg gave you his resignation until December 1914 known, but he stepped into force on 1 März 1915. In the United States, Max Landsberg sat for a reform of Jewish worship one. So he held his services in English and not in Hebrew. Also published by him prayer books passed to two-thirds of English songs and the rest in German language. He also pushed for the marriage of Jews and non-Jews.
