Marty Haugen

b. 1950 Person Name: Marty Haugen (1950-) Arranger of "HOLY MANNA" in Common Praise (1998) Marty Haugen (b. 1950), is a prolific liturgical composer with many songs included in hymnals across the liturgical spectrum of North American hymnals and beyond, with many songs translated into different languages. He was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II. Finding a vocation in that parish to provide accessible songs for worship, he continued to compose and to study, receiving an MA in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. A number of liturgical settings were prepared for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and more than 400 of his compositions are available from several publishers, especially GIA Publications, who also produced some 30 recordings of his songs. He is composer-in-residence at Mayflower Community Congregational Church in Minneapolis and continues to compose and travel to speak and teach at worship events around the world. Emily Brink

Sylvia G. Dunstan

1955 - 1993 Author of "All Who Hunger" in Voices United After a brief, arduous battle with liver cancer, Canadian Sylvia Dunstan died in 1993 at the age of 38. For thirteen years, Dunstan had served the United Church of Canada as a parish minister and prison chaplain. She is remembered by those who knew her for her passion for those in need, her gift of writing, and her love of liturgy. Sing! A New Creation

1859 - 1948 Arranger of "HOLY MANNA" in Song-Land Messenger Complete Horace Neely Lincoln, 1859-1948. Horace was the son of James Lin­coln and Em­a­line King, and hus­band of Et­ta Lee Thur­mand (mar­ried 1887). He moved with his fa­mi­ly to Tex­as when he was se­ven years old. At age 10, he be­gan at­tend­ing a sing­ing school con­duct­ed by James M. Jol­ley of Mis­sis­sip­pi. In 1880, he taught his first sing­ing class in his old neigh­bor­hood school house. Lat­er that year, he at­tend­ed his first nor­mal mu­sic school, taught at Moun­tain Home (now Hol­land), Tex­as. Lincoln had oth­er mu­sic­al train­ing under L. B. Shook (a for­mer stu­dent of Phil­ip Bliss) and John Mc­Pher­son of Il­li­nois. In 1898, he grad­u­at­ed from the Chi­ca­go Na­tion­al Col­lege of Mu­sic, and in 1906 took a post-grad­ua­te course un­der Ho­ra­tio Pal­mer. David Kai

Arranger of "HOLY MANNA" in Voices United David Kai grew up in Toronto attending the Centennial-Japanese United Church. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto, the Humber College music program where he specialized in arranging and composing, and The Centre for Christian Studies. Commissioned as a diaconal minister in 1987, David served in pastoral charges in Birtle, Manitoba, Orleans, Ontario and Ajax, Ontario. David has written hymn tunes and arrangements in collaboration with authors and composers such as Ruth Duck, Linnea Good, Neil Lemke, Pat Mayberry, Jeeva Sam, Doreen Lankshear-Smith and Brian Wren. He was a member of the committee that produced the Voices United hymn book, and also provided music for the Bible Quest curriculum. His hymns and arrangements have appeared in hymn books and collections in Canada, China and the USA. As a musician, David has performed with groups and musicians such as Linnea Good, the Union United Church Gospel Choir, and in bands playing styles from calypso and reggae to Christian rock and gospel. He has served as a musician at gatherings such as Berwick Camp, International Diakonia, Bay of Quinte Conference, the Ethnic Ministries Council and General Council Youth Forum.
