"Your Kingdom Come" -- On Bended Knee

Author: Frederick Lucian Hosmer (1840-1929) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #116 (1998) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 72 Lyrics: 1 "Your kingdom come" -- on bended knee the passing ages pray; and faithful souls have yearned to see on earth that kingdom's day. 2 But the slow watches of the night not less to God belong, and for the everlasting right the silent stars are strong. 3 And lo, already on the hills the flags of dawn appear. Gird up your loins, ye prophet souls, proclaim the day is near: 4 the day in whose clear-shining light all wrong shall stand revealed, when justice shall be throned with might, and every heart be healed: 5 when knowledge, hand in hand with peace, shall walk the earth abroad -- the day of perfect righteousness, the promised day of God. Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #536 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 72:7 Lyrics: 1 Lord, send thy word, and let it fly, Arm'd with thy Spirit's pow'r, Ten thousands shall confess its sway, And bless the saving hour. 2 Beneath the influence of thy grace, The barren wastes shall rise, With sudden greens, and fruits array'd, A blooming paradise. 3 True holiness shall strike its root In each regen'rate heart; Shall in a growth divine arise, And heavenly fruits impart. 4 Peace, with her olives crown'd, shall stretch Her wings from shore to shore; No trump shall rouse the rage of war, Nor murd'rous cannon roar. 5 Lord, for those days we wait--those days Are in thy word foretold; Fly swifter, sun and stars, and bring This promis'd age of gold! 6 Amen, with joy divine, let earth's Unnumber'd myriads cry; Amen, with joy divine, let heaven's Unnumber'd choirs reply. May ev'ry tongue Be tuned to praise And join to raise A grateful song. 4 Earth, hear your Maker's voice; Your great Redeemer own; Believe, obey, rejoice, And worship Him alone. I hate the tempter and his charms

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #92 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 72 Lyrics: I hate the tempter and his charms, I hate his flatt'ring breath; The serpent takes a thousand forms To cheat our souls to death. He feeds our hopes with airy dreams, Or kills with slavish fear; And holds us still in wide extremes, Presumption or despair. Now he persuades, "How easy 'tis To walk the road to heav'n;" Anon he swells our sins, and cries, "They cannot be forgiv'n." [He bids young sinners "yet forbear To think of God, or death; For prayer and devotion are But melancholy breath." He tells the aged, "they must die, "And 'tis too late to pray; In vain for mercy now they cry, For they have lost their day."] Thus he supports his cruel throne By mischief and deceit, And drags the sons of Adam down To darkness and the pit. Almighty God, cut short his power, Let him in darkness dwell And that he vex the earth no more, Confine him down to hell. Divine influences compared to rain

Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CCIX (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 72:6 First Line: As showers on meadows newly mown Lyrics: 1 As showers on meadows newly mown, Jesus shall shed his blessings down, Crown'd with whose life-infusing drops, Earth shall renew her blissful crops. 2 Lands that beneath a burning sky, Have long been desolate and dry, Th' effusions of his love shall share, And sudden greens and herbage wear. 3 The dews and rains, in all their store, Drenching the pastures o'er and o'er, Are not so copious as that grace, Which sanctifies and saves our race. 4 As in soft silence vernal showers Descend, and cheer the fainting flowers, So in the secrecy of love Falls the sweet influence from above. 5 That heavenly influence let me find In holy silence of the mind, While every grace maintains it bloom, Diffusing wide its rich perfume. 6 Nor let these blessings be confin'd To me, but pour'd on all mankind, 'Till earth's wild wastes in verdure rise, And a young Eden bless our eyes. O God, Your Judgments Give the King

Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) #312 (1990) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Psalm 72:1-19 Lyrics: 1 O God, your judgments give the King, his son your righteousness; with right he shall your people judge, your poor with uprightness. And then the mountains shall bring forth to all the people peace; the hills because of righteousness their blessing shall increase. 2 The people's poor ones he shall judge, the needy's children bless; and he will break in pieces those who would the poor oppress. The just shall flourish in his days, and prosper in his reign; and while the moon endures he shall abundant peace maintain. 3 His large and great dominion shall from sea to sea extend; it from the River shall reach forth to earth's remotest end. Yea, kings shall all before him bow, all nations shall obey; he'll save the needy when they cry, the poor who have no stay. 4 Now blessed be the Lord our God, the God of Israel, for he alone does wondrous works in glory that excel. And blessed be his glorious name to all eternity. The whole earth let his glory fill; amen, so let it be.
