Great God, Your Love Has Called Us Here

Author: Brian Wren, 1936- Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 32 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 42:9 Lyrics: 1 Great God, your love has called us here, as we, by love, for love were made. Your living likeness still we bear, though marred, dishonored, disobeyed. We come, with all our heart and mind your call to hear, your love to find. 2 We come with self-inflicted pains of broken trust and chosen wrong, half-free, half-bound by inner chains, by social forces swept along, by powers and systems close confined, yet seeking hope for humankind. 3 Great God, in Christ you call our name and then receive us as your own, not through some merit, right or claim, but by your gracious love alone. We strain to glimpse your mercy seat and find you kneeling at our feet. 4 Then take the towel, and break the bread, and humble us, and call us friends. Suffer and serve till all are fed, and show how grandly love intends to work till all creation sings, to fill all worlds, to crown all things. 5 Great God, in Christ you set us free your life to live, your joy to share. Give us your Spirit's liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair and offer all that faith can do while love is making all things new. Used With Tune: ABINGDON

Ye awful deeps, rise high; Sink low, ye tow'ring mountains, The Lord is drawing nigh; The righteous King of glory, Foretold in sacred story. Refrain: O blest is He that came In God the Father’s Name. 2 O Zion, He approacheth, Thy Lord and King for aye! Strew palms where He advanceth, Spread garments in His way. God’s promise faileth never, Hosanna sound forever! [Refrain] 3 Fling wide thy portals, Zion, And hail thy glorious King; His tidings of salvation To every people bring, Who, waiting yet in sadness, Would sing His praise in gladness. [Refrain] 4 He cometh not with warriors, And not with pomp and show, Yet smiteth He with terror Sin, death, and every foe. The Spirit’s sword He wieldeth, Not e’en to death He yieldeth. [Refrain] 5 Give heed, thou sinful people, Thy King and Saviour own; The kingdom He hath founded Is not an earthly one; No power can overthrow it, Nor earthly wisdom know it. [Refrain] 6 The throne which He ascendeth Is fixed in heaven above: His sanctified dominion Is light alone and love. His praise be ever sounding For grace and peace abounding. [Refrain] 7 Jerusalem is fallen, And closed its temple-door; Its sacrifices ended; Its scepter is no more. Christ’s kingdom never ceaseth, Its glory still increaseth. [Refrain] Amen. Elect

Author: Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 29 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 42:1-4 First Line: Jesus, we bless thy Father's name Lyrics: 1 Jesus, we bless thy Father's name; Thy God and our's are both the same; What heav'nly blessings from his throne Flow down to sinners thro' his Son! 2 Christ be my first Elect, he said, Then chose our souls in Christ our head, Before he gave the mountains birth, Or laid foundations for the earth. 3 Thus did eternal love begin To raise us up from death and sin; Our characters were then decreed, Blameless in love, a holy seed: 4 Predestinated to be sons, Born by degrees, but chose at once; A new regenerated race, To praise the glory of his grace. 5 With Christ, our Lord, we share our part, In the affections of his heart; Nor shall our souls be thence remov'd, 'Till He forgets his first belov'd.

This Is a Day of New Beginnings

Author: Brian Wren, 1936- Meter: 9.8.9.8 Appears in 23 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 42:9 Lyrics: 1 This is a day of new beginnings, time to remember and move on, time to believe what love is bringing, laying to rest the pain that's gone. 2 For by the life and death of Jesus, love's mighty Spirit, now as then, can make for us a world of difference, as faith and hope are born again. 3 Then let us, with the Spirit's daring, step from the past and leave behind our disappointment, guilt, and grieving, seeking new paths, and sure to find. 4 Christ is alive, and goes before us to show and share what love can do. This is a day of new beginnings; our God is making all things new. 4* In faith we'll gather round the table to taste and share what love can do. This is a day of new beginnings; our God is making all things new. Used With Tune: BEGINNINGS

Messenger of the Covenant

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 22 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 42:6-7 First Line: Jesus, commissioned from above Lyrics: 1 Jesus, commission'd from above, Descends to men below, And shews from whence the springs of love, In endless currents flow. 2 He, whom the boundless Heav'n adores, Whom Angels long to see; Quitted with joy those blissful shores, Ambassador to me! 3 To me a worm, a sinful clod, A rebel and forlorn; A foe, a traitor to my God, And of a traitor born. 4 To me, who never sought his grace, Who mock'd his sacred word; Who never knew, or lov'd his face, And all his will abhorr'd. 5 To me who could not even praise, When his kind heart I knew; But sought a thousand devious ways, Rather than keep the true. 6 Yet this redeeming Angel came, So vile a worm to bless; He took, with gladness, all my blame, And gave his righteousness. 7 O! that my languid heart might glow, With ardour all divine; And for more love than Seraphs know, Like burning Seraphs shine.
