1495 - 1550 Person Name: Mattaeus Greiter, c. 1500-1550 Topics: 23rd Sunday after Pentecost; Adoration and Praise; Eternal Life; Worship Composer (attributed to) of "OLD 113TH" in The Covenant Hymnal Greitter, Matthäus, was a monk and chorister of Strassburg Cathedral, but in 1524 espoused the cause of the Reformation. In 1528 he was appointed assistant pastor of St. Martin's Church, and afterwards at St. Stephen's. When the Interim [Agricola] was forced on Strassburg, he was the only one of the Lutheran pastors that sought to further it, a course which he afterwards deeply regretted. His death is dated by Wetzel, i. 349, as Dec. 20, 1550; by the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, ix. 636, as Nov. 20, 1550; while Koch, ii. 104, says he died of the pestilence in 1552. Greitter was a distinguished musician, and with his friend Dachstein (q.v.) edited the Strassburg Kirchen ampt, 1524-5. Four psalm tunes by Greitter, and one by Dachstein were inserted by Calvin in his first Hymnbook published at Strassburg, 1539. All these were transferred to the first edition of the French-Genevan Psalter in 1542, and two of them, both by Greitter (the tunes to psalms 36 and 91), were retained in the final edition of 1562. Of his seven Psalm versions 4 have been translated into English :— i. Ach Gott, wie lang vergissest mein. Ps. xiii. 1524. Wackernagel, iii. p. 89, in 4 st. William M. Runyan

1870 - 1957 Person Name: William M. Runyan, 1870-1957 Topics: Worship and Adoration Composer of "FAITHFULNESS" in Lead Me, Guide Me (2nd ed.) Showing early musical promise, William Marion Runyan (b. Marion, NY, 1870; d. Pittsburg, KS, 1957) was a substitute church organist by the age of twelve. He became a Methodist minister in 1891 and served several churches in Kansas but turned to evangelism in 1903; he worked for the Central Methodist Conference for the next twenty years. Following that service, Runyan became pastor at the Federated Church at John Brown University, Sulphur Springs, Arkansas. Editor of Christian Workers Magazine, he also served the Moody Bible Institute and was an editor for Hope Publishing Company until his retirement in 1948. Runyan wrote a number of hymn texts, gospel songs, and hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Ronald A. Nelson

Nelson With degrees from St. Olaf College and the University of Wisconsin Madison, Ronald A. Nelson served for 37 years as Director of Music at Westwood Lutheran Church in suburban Minneapolis, where he has been named Cantor Emeritus and now serves as choir member. Since his retirement he devotes his time to composing, guest conducting, and serving as organist for Chapel Services at Becketwood, the Senior Cooperative where he and his wife Betty Lou reside. In 1999, he was one of 50 composers chosen to write music for the "Continental Harmony" project of the American Composers Forum and National Endowment for the Arts to celebrate the new millennium. That composition, "Building Bridges," received Honorable Mention in the Waging Peace Through Singing competition of the University of Oregon. For a 2001 Composers Forum "Faith Partners" Commission he wrote music for three Wisconsin parishes of different denominations, and is now doing a second "Faith Partners" for two parishes in Hutchinson, Minnesota. He is the recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Olaf College, the F. Melius Christiansen Award from Minnesota ACDA, and the Faithful Servant Award from the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, which last year made available a CD of his compositions. In 2007 the book "With A Voice of Singing - Essays on Children, Choirs and Music in the Church" was published in his honor. --www.giamusic.com

Cross Topics: Adoration and Worship The Lord's Day Author of "The dawn of God's dear Sabbath" in Hymns for the Living Age Cross, Ada, née Cambridge, daughter of Henry Cambridge, born at St. Germaine, Norfolk, Nov. 21, 1844, and married, in 1869, to George Frederick Cross, who, in 1870, took Holy Orders as a curate in England, and subsequently, after holding various curacies in Australia, became, in 1877, Incumbent of Coleraine, in the diocese of Ballarat. Her works include Hymns on the Holy Communion, 1866; Hymns on the Litany, 1865, &c.; and she has also contributed to Lays of the Pious Minstrels, 1862; English Lyrics, &c.; and published a prose story, "The Two Surplices,” 1865, and tales in various magazines. Her hymns have attained to some popularity, and are characterized by great sweetness and purity of rhythm, combined with naturalness and simplicity. The best known are:— 1.
