Sing to the LORD, a new made Song

Appears in 26 hymnals Topics: Prophecies Of Jesus Christ, concerning his Coming and Government Lyrics: 1 Sing to the LORD, a new made Song; Let Earth in one assembled Throng, Her common Patron's Praise resound, Who us hath with Salvation crown'd. 2 Sing to the LORD, and bless his Name, From Day to day his Peace proclaim; To Heathen Lands his Fame rehearse, His Wonders to the Universe. 3 He's great, and greatly to be prais'd; In Majesty and Glory rais'd Above all other Deities, He only rules who made the Skies. 4 With Majesty and Honour crown'd, Beauty and Strength his Throne surround, But Pageantry and Idols all Are they, whom Gods the Heathen call. 5 Let Worship be to him restor'd, By you who have false Gods ador'd; Ascribe due Honour to his Name, That Honour he alone can claim. 6 Peace Off'rings on his Altar lay, Before his Throne your Homage pay; To worship at his sacred Court, Let all the trembling World resort. 7 Proclaim aloud, JEHOVAH reigns, Whose Pow'r the Universe sustains; Let therefore Heav'n new Joys confess, And heav'nly Rapture Earth express. 8 He banish'd Justice shall restore, Its loud Applause let Ocean roar; Its mute Inhabitants rejoice, And for his Triumph find a Voice. 9 For Joy let fertile Valleys sing, The chearful Groves their Tribute bring; The tuneful Choir of Birds awake, Their sweetest Melody to make. 10 The LORD's Approach to celebrate: Who now sets out with awful State From Heav'n, to judge the World, he's come, With Justice to reward and doom. Scripture: Psalm 96 Used With Tune: [Sing to the Lord, a new made Song]

God, I'm Calling Out to You

Author: Emma Turl Meter: 14.14 D Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Government First Line: God, I'm calling out to you from a distant, barren land Lyrics: 1 God, I'm calling out to you from a distant, barren land: listen to my urgent cries carried faint upon the wind. When my soul is overwhelmed and resilience disappears, lead me to your high retreat, secure above all my fears. 2 Still be there to shelter me when accusers threaten harm— in the refuge of your strength let your presence keep me calm. In your sanctuary safe from attacks and buffetings let me, like a fledgling, rest in comfort under your wings. 3 God, you raised your Son from death, Christ whose kingdom shall endure, and because he gives me life my inheritance is sure. May your faithful tender love that restores us and sustains draw unending thanks and praise from hearts where Jesus now reigns. Scripture: Psalm 61 Used With Tune: THINE

The Lords of Earth Are in the Hands

Author: David G. Preston Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Government Lyrics: 1 The lords of earth are in the hands of God who reigns on high; within their councils there he stands with ever-watchful eye. 2 "How long will you betray the cause of justice in the land? You let the wicked flout the laws and prosper by your hand. 3 "Defend the poor from those who place no limit on their greed; support the weak and fatherless and rescue those in need." 4 Though mindless and corrupt they prove, and tread the people down, though earth's foundations all remove, still God is on his throne. 5 They proudly boast a godlike birth; in death, like men, they fall. Arise, O God, and judge the earth and rule the nations all! Scripture: Psalm 82 Used With Tune: ADAM

The tongue, the tongue, with all its powers

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Tongue, government of the Lyrics: The tongue, the tongue, with all its powers, Is Thine who made it, Thine, not ours; Lord, teach us early to controul, That tameless tell-tale of the soul. 'Twas with the tongue, the serpent's wile Did Eve's simplicity beguile; 'Twas with the tongue fall'n Adam tried, His guilt behind her sin to hide. 350 The tongue's a sword, a two-edged sword, To kill or quicken with a word; A key to ope and shut the heart, To lock out knowledge or impart. With it God's glory we proclaim, With it blaspheme His holy Name; Here good and evil strangely meet, Hence bitter waters flow with sweet. Lord, such confusion should not be; Thou art all truth, all equity; Pure from Thine hand the creature sprung, But lost Thine image through the tongue. Through it that image be restored; Let tongues of fire that preach Thy Word, Call, by Thy Holy Spirit's might, Souls out of darkness into light. Be this our lot:--may heart and tongue To heavenly harmony be strung, Till every tone Thy love record, And every pulse praise Thee the Lord.

The Lord himself is King

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Of Jesus Christ, concerning his Coming and Government Lyrics: 1 The LORD himself is King, O let the Earth rejoice; Yea, let the Isles be glad And shout with chearful Voice: Darkness and awful Clouds, His Glory shroud in State; Judgment and Righteousness, As close Attendants wait, At his Pavillion Gate. 2 Before him raging Flames, His Foes with Vengeance struck, His Lightnings shone Abroad, And Earth with Terror shook: The Hills with one Accord, Like Wax before him melt; Their Heights no Help afford, In Presence of the LORD. 3 The Heav'ns, his Truth to show, With Fire his Foes pursu'd: The trembling World below, His awful Glory view'd. Confounded be their Host, Who worship Day be Day Carv'd Idols, made with Hands; Ye Gods to whom they pray, To him your Homage pay. 4 Sion thy Triumph heard, And Judah was o'erjoy'd; Because thy Judgments, LORD, Have Pagan Pride destroy'd: For thou art seated high, On thy exalted Throne, Unrival'd in the Sky, Both Earth and Heaav'n shall own, That thou art GOD alone. 5 All ye who love the LORD, Hate Sin, and Truth esteem; He will from wicked Men, His Servant's Soul redeem: A glorious Light springs up, And Joy the Just shall bless; Ye Righteous praise the LORD, With thankful tongues confess, His Truth and Holiness. Scripture: Psalm 97 Used With Tune: [The Lord himself is King]

With ever restless, and ungovern'd Rage

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Of Jesus Christ, concerning his Coming and Government Lyrics: 1 With ever restless, and ungover'd Rage, Why are the Heathen ill Designs contriving? Why thus in rash and vain Attempts engage, Which they can ne'er complete, tho; boldly striving? The earnly Kings, in council close combined, Their utmost Pow'r, their various Forces bring; In Union join'd, in compact all designed, Against the LORD, and his anointed King. 2 "Must we submit," presumptuously they say, "And yield, obedient, whilst they keep us under? "No, let us cast their slavish Bands away. "Shake off their Chains, and break their Cords asunder.' But on his Throne the LORD in Glory seated, Knows their Intent, and sees how they combine; And while their bold Attempts are all defeated, Laughs them to Scorn, and mocks their vain Design. 3 His waken'd Wrath shall shake his guilty Foes, In great Displeasure he shall sore distress them; And thus while yet they dare hi Will oppose, The LORD himself in Thunder shall address them; "Tho' madly thus you have my Pow'r disowned, "Yet be assur'd, the King whom I ordain, "On Sion’s holy Hill shall sit enthroned, "And there securely shall for ever reign." 4 Let all attend and hear GOD's fixt Decree On which he made to me this Declaration, “Thou art my Son, I have begotten thee "This Day, be Sov'regin LORD of ev'ry Nation; “Ask, and receive, 'tis yielded to thy Pleasure; "The Heathen thine Inheritance shall be; "Lands far remote, whose Limits know no Measure, "Shall be eternally posses'd by thee. 5 "Thy awful threatning Sceptte thou shalt shake "O'er all the guilty Foes, and keep them under; "Just as the massy Bars of Iron break "The Potter’s weak and brittle Ware asunder." Learn then, ye Princes, hear with due Attention, And be ye wise, ye judges of the Earth; His sacred Name with humble Rev'rence mention, And joy before him with a godly Mirth. 6 Before the Son bow down with due Respect, Strive to appease him by a low Submission, Lest he in Wrath revenge the bold Neglect, And doom you, helpless, to a swift Perdition. If but in Part, his Anger be inflamed, What Mortal can the fatal stroke withstand? He soon shall see his daring Foes ashamed, And crush'd at once by his Almighty Hand. 7 Then blest are they, who on our GOD rely, With constant Hope on his strong Arm depending, Who humbly strive to serve the LORD most high, With grateful Hearts and Fervour never ending. Scripture: Psalm 2 Used With Tune: [With ever restless and ungoverned rage]

Who has believ'd thy Word

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Topics: God governing power and goodness Lyrics: Who has believed thy word, Or thy salvation known? Reveal thine arm, Almighty Lord, And glorify thy Son. The Jews esteemed him here Too mean for their belief; Sorrows his chief acquaintance were, And his companion, grief. They turned their eyes away, And treated him with scorn; But 'twas their grief upon him lay, Their sorrows he has borne. 'Twas for the stubborn Jews, And Gentiles then unknown, The God of justice pleased to bruise His best-beloved Son. "But I'll prolong his days, And make his kingdom stand; My pleasure," saith the God of grace, "Shall prosper in his hand." ["His joyful soul shall see The purchase of his pain And by his knowledge justify The guilty sons of men.] ["Ten thousand captive slaves, Released from death and sin, Shall quit their prisons and their graves And own his power divine.] ["Heav'n shall advance my Son To joys that earth denied; Who saw the follies men had done, And bore their sins, and died."] Scripture: Isaiah 53:1-5

Like sheep we went astray

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 140 hymnals Topics: God governing power and goodness Lyrics: Like sheep we went astray, And broke the fold of God, Each wand'ring in a diff'rent way, But all the downward road. How dreadful was the hour When God our wand'rings laid, And did at once his vengeance pour, Upon the Shepherd's head! How glorious was the grace When Christ sustained the stroke His life and blood the Shepherd pays A ransom for the flock. His honor and his breath Were taken both away, Joined with the wicked in his death, And made as vile as they. But God shall raise his head O'er all the sons of men, And make him see a num'rous seed, To recompense his pain. "I'll give him," saith the Lord, A portion with the strong; He shall possess a large reward, And hold his honors long." Scripture: Isaiah 53:6-9
