Huffman was educated at Wheaton College, Illinois; Northern Baptist Seminary, Oak Brook, Illinois; and Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. He served as minister of music at Christ Church, Oak Brook, Illinois (1965-77), and at the First Presbyterian Church of Covina, California (1988). He composed over 20 hymn tunes and arrangements. United Church of Canada. University of Toronto, B.A., 1928; ordination after study at Emmanuel College, 1931. Pastorates in Toronto, 1931-1932, 1945; Newton-on-Ayr (Scotland), 1932-1933; London (Ont.), 1933-1940, 1959-1973; Victoria, British Columbia, 1945-1955; Burlington, Ont., 1955-1959. He spent 1940-1945 in India, not far from where his father had built a hospital with the local maharajah's blessing, teaching at Indore Theological Seminary and evangelizing in nearby villages. After his retirement, he published privately three small collections of hymns he had written since returning to Canada, of which only one for Advent, "Herald! sound the note of judgment," had already become widely known. --Hugh D. "Stand still and see" yea, see to-day. Confidence. 2. Thou wilt show me, Mighty Father. The Way of Life. 3. Trust and tremble—that is all. John Quarles

1624 - 1665 Person Name: John Quarles (1624-1665) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Author of "Fountain of Knowledge, Living Breath" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 Quarles, John, son of Francis Quarles, was born in Essex in 1624, and was educated at Exeter College, Oxford. He bore arms within the garrison at Oxford on behalf of Charles I. and subsequently (it is said) he was raised to the rank of captain in the King's service. On the downfall of the King, Quarles retired to London, and devoted himself to literature for a livelihood. He died there during the great Plague, 1665. He published several works including (1) Jeremiah's Lamentations Paraphrased, with Divine Meditations, 1648; and (2) Divine Meditations upon Several Subjects whereunto is annexed God's Love to Man’s Unworthiness, with several Divine Ejaculations. London, 1655 (Wood's Athenae Oxon.). From the Ejaculation, Mr. Darling adapted two hymns for his Hymns for the Church of England. In the 1889 ed. these are:— “O King of kings, before Whose Throne" (Holy Trinity); and "O Thou Who sitt'st in heaven and seest" (Visitation of Sick). --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

1864 - 1928 Person Name: E. F. Horner, 1864-1928 Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Composer of "ALDERSGATE STREET" in The Methodist Hymn-Book with Tunes Born: February 11, 1864, Greenwich, London, England. Died: October 8, 1928, Paddington, London, England. As of 1881, Horner was living at home in Lambeth, Surrey, and working as a druggist’s assistant. In 1901, he still lived in Lambeth and taught music. Paddington, London, 8 Oct 1928. He was a pupil of Frederick Bridge* at the Royal College of Music. 1844 - 1912 Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Composer of "PROCLAMATION (Peace)" Albert Lister Peace DMus United Kingdom 1844-1912. Born at Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, son of a warehouseman and woolstapler, he was extremely gifted as a musician, largely self-taught, playing the organ at Holmfirth Parish Church near Huddersfield at age nine. He married Margaret Martin Steel Gilchrist, and they had three children: Lister, Archibald, and Margaret. In 1865 he was appointed organist of Trinity Congregational Church in Glasgow, Scotland. He obtained his doctorate degree from the University of Oxford in 1875. He became organist at Glasgow Cathedral in 1879. In 1897 he succeeded William Best as organist at St George’s Hall, Liverpool. In later years he was in much demand to play the organ in recitals. He did so at Canterbury Cathedral (1886), Victoria Hall, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent (1888), and Newcastle Cathedral (1891). He composed orchestrations, sonatas, cantatas, and concert and church service anthems. He was an arranger, author, and editor. He died at Blundelsands, Liverpool, England. John Perry
