Severus Gastorius

1646 - 1682 Hymnal Number: 94 Composer of "WAS GOTT TUT" in Trinity Hymnal Severus Gastorius (1647-1682 ) was a cantor in Jena, central Germany. The son of a Weimar school teacher, Severus was born with the family name Bauchspiess (later Latinised to Gastorius) in Oettern, near Weimar. In 1667, he started studying at the University of Jena. From 1670, he deputized for cantor Andreas Zöll in Jena and married his daughter the following year. Gastorius assumed Zöll's position after his death in 1677. One of his friends, Samuel Rodigast, wrote the hymn "Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan" for Gastorius when he was sick (to cheer him up as Rodigast writes in his dedication). Even before he recovered, Gastorius set it to music based on a melody by Werner Fabricius. The tune became widely known in Germany as the cantor students of Jena cantor sang it every week at Gastorius' door as well as when they returned home. Gastorius was buried on 8 May 1682 in Jena's Johanniskirche cemetery. Gastorius had requested that the hymn "Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan" be sung at his funeral. Gastorius is also credited with composing music for the funeral motet Du aber gehe hin bis das Ende komme. F. F. Flemming

1778 - 1813 Person Name: Friedrich Ferdinand Flemming Hymnal Number: 179b Composer of "FLEMMING" in Trinity Hymnal Friedrich Ferdinand Flemming Germany 1778-1813. Born in Neuhausen, Erzgebirge, Germany, he studied medicine at Wittenberg, 1796-1800, Jena, Vienna, and Trieste. He practiced as a physician in Berlin until his death, but, musically, is remembered for his setting of Horace's ode beginning “Integer Vitae”, from which the tune “Flemming” is adapted. He was active in musical circles and composed many songs for a male vocal ensemble, “Liedertafel”. He died in Berlin. John Perry

Eliza F. Morris

1821 - 1874 Hymnal Number: 466 Author of "God of pity, God of grace" in Trinity Hymnal Morris, Eliza Fanny, née Goffe, was born in London in 1821, and married in 1849 to Josiah Morris. She gained the prize for a poem on Kindness to Animals offered by the Band of Hope. Her published works are he Voice and the Reply, Worcester, 1858, and Life Lyrics. She also edited a Bible Class Hymn Book, and contributed the words to School Harmonies, published by her husband. Her hymns in common use include:— 1. Come unto Me and rest. Christ's Invitation. From The Voice and the Reply, 1858, into the 1874 Supplement to the New Congregational, in an altered form. 2. God of pity, God of grace. Lent. This hymn in Litany form appeared in Pt. ii. of The Voice and the Reply, 1858, entitled "The Prayer in the Temple." From Miller's Singers and Songs of the Church, 1869, we gather that this hymn was written on the 4th of Sept., 1857. 3. 0 Thou, blest Lamb of God. Love for and Trust in Jesus desired. William Shrubsole

1760 - 1806 Hymnal Number: 218b Composer of "MILES LANE" in Trinity Hymnal William Shrubsole (bap. 1760, d. 1806), organist. United Kingdom.When young, he sang in the choir at Canterbury Cathedral, He became organist at Bangor Cathedral, when he was dismissed for attending non-comformist meetings. He then became organist of Spa Fields Chapel, London, holding that post until his death. He was a successful teacher. He was an alto singer and sung at Westminster Abbey and Drury Lane churches. He knew Edward Perronet, who wrote the words to the hymn he composed music for. Perronet left Schrubsole property in his will. John Perry Not to be confused with W. Christopher Tye

1497 - 1572 Hymnal Number: 22 Composer of "WINDSOR" in Trinity Hymnal Tye, Christopher, MUS. D., born at Westminster in the reign of Henry VIII. He was celebrated as a musician, and was granted the degree of MUS. D. at Cambridge in 1545. He was musical tutor to King Edward VI., and organist of the Chapel Royal under Queen Elizabeth. Besides composing numerous anthems, he rendered the first fourteen chapters of the Acts of the Apostles into metre, which were set to music by him and sung in Edward 6th's Chapel, and published in 1553. William Hayman Cummings

1831 - 1915 Person Name: William H. Cummings Hymnal Number: 168 Arranger of "MENDELSSOHN" in Trinity Hymnal William H. Cummings (b. Sidbury, Devonshire, England, 1831; d. Dulwich, London, England, 1915) had a lifelong love of Felix Mendelssohn, sparked when he sang at age sixteen in the first London performance of Elijah, which was directed by Mendelssohn himself. As a young boy, Cummings had been a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral and later sang in the choirs of the Temple Church, Westminster Abbey, and the Chapel Royal. Cummings became a famous tenor–he sang in oratorios and was especially known for his evangelist role in the Bach passions. He taught voice at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Normal College and School for the Blind in London and was also an accomplished organist. Cummings wrote books and articles on music history, wrote a biography of Henry Purcell and edited his music, and composed many choral pieces. Bert Polman

Ralph Wardlaw

1779 - 1853 Hymnal Number: 375 Author of "O Lord our God, arise!" in Trinity Hymnal Wardlaw, Ralph, D.D. This venerable and (in his generation) influential Scottish divine contributed twelve hymns to the praise of the Church Universal that are likely to live in a humble and useful way. As having so done, and besides edited several collections of hymns, he claims a place of honour in this work. Critically, and regarded as literature, his hymns have little of poetry in them; no "winged words" to lift the soul heavenward. They reflect simply and plainly the lights and shadows of everyday experiences of the spiritual life, rather than its etherialities and subtleties. His "Lift up to God the voice of praise " is the most widely known; and there is a certain inspiriting clangour about it when well sung; yet it is commonplace. His "Hail morning, known among the blest," is narrative and prosaic, though it filled a gap at the time in Sabbath morning worship. “At the time by God appointed," "Remember Thee! remember Christ!" and "Contemplate, saints, the source divine," have vanishing gleams of imaginative light and fine and tender emotion. "O how good the hallowed union," "Where the sounds of plaintive wailing," and "See the Sun of truth arise," are melodious and singable, and pleasant but shallow. “Christ of all my hopes the ground," (Pt. ii.) "When with wasting sickness worn," is much too long, but is a fairly good song of Zion. Wardlaw published in 1803 a Selection of Hymns, to displace what was called The Tabernacle Collection, 1800, that had been used by the Congregationalists of Scotland, and to which he contributed a few hymns. He was assisted in the preparation of this compilation by Dr. Charles Stuart, of Dunearn. The first edition contained 322 hymns. In 1817 a Supplement was added of 171, bringing up the number to 493. Of these eleven (or twelve strictly) were by Wardlaw. Two of these had previously appeared in the Scottish Missionary Magazine (vol. viii. 48). His hymns bear so very slight a proportion to Dr. Wardlaw's writings as a profound theologian and expositor and thoroughly-equipped controversialist on the chief problems of the period, as to make it necessary to refer the reader to his remarkable Life, by the Rev. Dr. W. L. Alexander, entitled, Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Ralph Wardlaw, D.D. (2nd ed., 1856). Wardlaw was born at Dalkeith on December 22, 1779, where he received his early education, later attending Glasgow University. His only church was in Glasgow. He died at Easterhouse near Glasgow on Dec. 17, 1853, and his public funeral is still remembered for the representative character of the vast multitude who attended it. [Rev. A. B.
