The Slighted Stranger

Author: Jennie Mast Hymnal: Timeless Truths #896 Meter: 9.11.11.10.11.9.10.9 with refrain Scripture: Isaiah 53:4 First Line: Without, awaiting at the threshold Lyrics: 1 Without, awaiting at the threshold, Is a stranger pleading in an undertone, At noonday and the silent midnight slumb’ring, At break of day and in the twilight gloom. When hope is bright, or dark’ning clouds are low’ring; Waiting since thy childhood’s early dawn, The Prince of peace, the Father’s only Son, Wills to make thy heart His royal throne. 2 Without, awaiting at the threshold, Is a faithful Friend you’ve slighted o’er and o’er; With pierced hands and thorn-marks on His forehead, The human heart could ask for nothing more. His visage, marred by Calv’ry’s cruel anguish, Tells of love thy bosom hath not known; The well-beloved, the Father’s chosen One— Waiting still to claim thee for His own. 3 Without, awaiting at the threshold, With His mantle dampened by the falling dew— Another friend long since would have departed— In patient love He lingers still for you. He bore our grief and carried all our sorrows; Let Him wait no longer there alone; In penitence requite the Guest unknown; Bid Him come, thy heart to make His throne. Refrain 3: Sinner, will you let Him in? Turn, oh, turn Him not away. Topics: Invitation Tune Title: [Without, awaiting at the threshold]

The Abasement and Exaltation of CHRIST

Hymnal: The Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs of the Old and New Testament, faithully translated into English metre #I.LIII (1758) Scripture: Isaiah 53 First Line: O who has our report believ'd? Lyrics: 1 O who has our report believ'd? And who JEHOVAH's arm doth know? 2 For as a tender plant and root Before Him, from dry ground He'll grow. He has no form, nor comeliness; And when his troubled face we see, No beauty in Him we discern, that by us He desir'd should be. 3 He slighted and rejected is Ev'n of the men He came to save: A man of constant sorrows full, And intimate with heavy grief. Yet we, while He was thus abus'd, Our faces turn'd and hid from Him; By others round He was despis'd, Nor did we Him at all esteem. 4 Tho' sure they were our griefs He bore, Our sinking sorrows bare did He; Yet strook, and smote & scourg'd by GOD, We judg'd Him righteously to be. 5 But ah! 'twas only for our sins That He did all his wounds receive: For our iniquities was bruis'd, That He might us from them relieve. Our chastisement on Him was laid, To purchase our eternal peace: and by his stripes it is that we Are heal'd with wondrous pow'r and grace. 6 We all like sheep astray have gone, Each turn'd to his own sinful way: And yet the trespass on us all The LORD on Him alone did lay. 7 Oppress'd, abus'd, He silent was, As the meek lamb to slaughter bro't; Or sheep, before her shearers dumb, His guiltless mouth He op'ned not 8 From judgment and from pris'n [the grave] Soon rais'd and took away was he; And of his generation who Shall tell the wondrous history? For from the land of living ones In early age was He destroy'd; And for my people's sins the stroke Of vi'lent death was on Him laid. 9 With criminals He dy'd; and yet Among the rich He made his grave; Because He did no injury, Nor ever with his mouth deceive. 10 Yet it JEHOVAH pleas'd to bruise And put Him to extreme distress, When Thou shalt offer up his soul Only for others trespasses: When this is done, then He shall rise, Live ever, and his offspring see; JEHOVAH's pleasure in his hand Shall prosper to eternity: 11 The mulitply'd and happy fruit, Of the vast travel of his soul, He shall survey, and with the view He shall be pleased to the full: By knowledge of the way of life, My righteous servant shall appear Vast multitudes to justify; For He their sins will fully bear. 12 Therefore a portion with the great To Him, as due, divide I will; And with the mighty ones shall He Divide and share the glorious spoil. Because He pour'd his soul to death, And with transgressors numbred was: The sin of many bore; and He For helpless sinners pleads the cause. Languages: English

Bruised for our iniquities

Author: James Relly Hymnal: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs #XLII (1792) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Scripture: Isaiah 53:5 First Line: With bruises Christ was drest Lyrics: 1 With bruises Christ was drest, And nail'd p to a tree; The pruning hook his soul opprest That he might fruitful be. 2 He was not purg'd in vain, But did his strength recruit; And when was finish'd all his pain, There then appear'd his fruit. 3 Distill'd from all his smart The holy unction ran; This is the wine that cheers the heart, The heart of God and man. 4 With us he doth abound, As branches, he the stem; From him our fruitfulness is found, And shall remain in him. 5 Hence shall our joys arise, And ev'ry hour improve, Whilst, in his smoaking sacrifice, God hears our songs above.
