Blessèd city, heavenly Salem

Author: J. M. Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: Common Praise #208 (2000) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Scripture: 1 Kings 8:28-30 Lyrics: PART ONE - 1 Blessèd city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who of living stones art builded in the height of heaven above, and with angel hosts encircled, as a bride dost earthward move. 2 From celestial realms descending, bridal glory round thee shed, meet for him whose love espoused thee, to thy Lord shalt thou be led; all thy streets and all thy bulwarks of pure gold are fashionèd. 3 Bright thy gates of pearl are shining, they are open evermore; and by virtue of his merits thither faithful souls do soar, who for Christ's dear name in this world pain and tribulation bore. 4 Many a blow and biting sculpture polished well those stones elect, in their places now compacted by the heavenly Architect, who therewith hath willed for ever that his palace should be decked. PART TWO - 5 Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the Head and corner-stone, chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one, Holy Sion's help for ever, and her confidence alone. 6 All that dedicated city, dearly loved of God on high, in exultant jubilation pours perpetual melody, God the One in Three adoring in glad hymns eternally. PART THREE - 7 To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, to-day; with thy wonted loving-kindness hear thy servants as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway. 8 Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain, what they gain from thee for ever with the blessed to retain, and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign. Doxology: [To be sung at the end of any part, or of the whole hymn] Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever Three, and ever One, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run. The Condescension of God

Hymnal: Poems on Subjects Chiefly Devotional, Vol. 1 #65 (1760) Scripture: 1 Kings 8:27 First Line: Eternal pow'r, almighty God Lyrics: I. Eternal pow'r, almighty God, Who can approach thy throne? Accessless light is thy abode, To angel-eyes unknown. II. Before the radiance of thine eye The heav'ns no longer shine, And all the glories of the sky Are but the shade of thine. III. Great God, and wilt thou condescend To cast a look below, To this vile world thy notice bend, These seats of sin and woe? IV. But oh! to shew thy smiling face, To bring thy glories near— Amazing and transporting grace To dwell with mortals here! V. How strange! how awful is thy love! With trembling we adore: Not all th' exalted minds above Its wonders can explore. VI. While golden harps, and angel tongues Resound immortal lays, Great God, permit our humble songs To rise and mean thy praise. Languages: English

God Has Spoken by the Prophets

Author: George W. Briggs, 1875-1959 Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #667 (2003) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: 1 Kings 8:20 Lyrics: 1 God has spoken by the prophets, spoken the unchanging Word, each from age to age proclaiming God, the one, the righteous Lord! 'Mid the world's despair and turmoil one firm anchor holding fast: God eternal reigns forever, God the first and God the last. 2 God has spoken by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son, brightness of the Father's glory, with the Father ever one; spoken by the Word incarnate, God of God, ere time was born; Light of light, to earth descending, Christ, as God in human form. 3 God is speaking by the Spirit, speaking to our hearts again; in the age-long Word declaring God's own message, now as then. Through the rise and fall of nations one sure faith yet standing fast: God abides, the Word unchanging, God the first and God the last. Languages: English Tune Title: HYMN TO JOY
