Isaiah 55: Ho! ye that thirst, approach the spring

Hymnal: Scottish Psalter and Paraphrases #R26 (1800) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Isaiah 55 First Line: Ho! ye that thirst, approach the spring Lyrics: Ho! ye that thirst, approach the spring where living waters flow: Free to that sacred fountain all without a price may go. How long to streams of false delight will ye in crowds repair? How long your strength and substance waste on trifles, light as air? My stores afford those rich supplies that health and pleasure give: Incline your ear, and come to me; the soul that hears shall live. With you a cov’nant I will make, that ever shall endure; The hope which gladdened David’s heart my mercy hath made sure. Behold he comes! your leader comes, with might and honour crowned; A witness who shall spread my name to earth’s remotest bound. 134 See! nations hasten to his call from ev’ry distant shore; Isles, yet unknown, shall bow to him, and Isr’el’s God adore. Seek ye the Lord while yet his ear is open to your call; While offered mercy still is near, before his footstool fall. Let sinners quit their evil ways, their evil thoughts forego: And God, when they to him return, returning grace will show. He pardons with o’erflowing love: for, hear the voice divine! My nature is not like to yours, nor like your ways are mine: But far as heav’n’s resplendent orbs beyond earth’s spot extend, As far my thoughts, as far my ways, your ways and thoughts transcend. And as the rains from heav’n distil, nor thither mount again, But swell the earth with fruitful juice, and all its tribes sustain: So not a word that flows from me shall ineffectual fall; But universal nature prove obedient to my call. With joy and peace shall then be led the glad converted lands; The lofty mountains then shall sing, the forests clap their hands. Where briers grew ‘midst barren wilds, shall firs and myrtles spring; And nature, through its utmost bounds, eternal praises sing. Languages: English

Who has believ'd thy Word

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.CXLI (1766) Scripture: Isaiah 55:10-12 Lyrics: 1 Who has believ'd thy Word, Or that Salvation known? Reveal thine Arm, Almighty Lord, And glorify thy Son. 2 The Jews esteem'd Him here Too mean for their Belief; Sorrows his chief Acquaintance were, And his Companion, Grief. 3 They turn'd their Eyes away, And treated Him with Scorn; But 'twas their Griefs upon him lay, Their Sorrows he has borne. 4 'Twas for the stubborn Jews, And Gentiles then unknown, The God of Justice pleas'd to bruise His best-beloved Son. 5 "But I'll prolong his Days, "And make his Kingdom stand; "My Pleasure, (saith the God of Grace) "Shall prosper in his Hand. [6 "His joyful Soul shall see "The Purchase of his Pain "And by his Knowledge justify "The guilty Sons of Men.] [7 "Ten Thousand Captive Slaves, "Releas'd from Death and Sin, "Shall quit their Prisons and their Graves "And own his Pow'r Divine.] 8 "Heav'n shall advance my Son "To Joys that Earth deny'd; "Who saw the Follies Men had done, "And bore their Sins, and dy'd." Isaiah the Prophet Has Written of Old

Author: Joy F. Patterson Hymnal: Glory to God #77 (2013) Meter: 11.8.11.8 D Scripture: Isaiah 55:10-13 Lyrics: 1 Isaiah the prophet has written of old how God’s new creation shall come. Instead of the thorn tree, the fir tree shall grow; the wolf shall lie down with the lamb. The mountains and hills shall burst forth into song, the peoples be led forth in peace, for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 Yet nations still prey on the meek of the world, and conflict turns parent from child. Your people despoil all the sweetness of earth; the briar and the thorn tree grow wild. God, bring to fruition your will for the earth, that no one shall hurt or destroy, that wisdom and justice shall reign in the land and your people shall go forth in joy.
