To Mock Your reign

Author: F. Pratt Green (1903-) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #191 (1998) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: John 18, 19 First Line: To mock your reign, O dearest Lord Lyrics: 1 To mock your reign, O dearest Lord, they made a crown of thorns; set you with taunts along that road from which no one returns. They did not know, as we do now, that glorious is your crown; that thorns would flower upon your brow, your sorrows heal our own. 2 In mock acclaim, O gracious Lord, they snatched a purple cloak, your passion turned, for all they cared, into a soldier's joke. They did not know, as we do now, that though we merit blame you will your robe of mercy throw around our naked shame. 3 A sceptered reed, O patient Lord, they thrust into your hand, and acted out their grim charade to its appointed end. They did not know, as we do now, though empires rise and fall, your Kingdom shall not cease to grow till love embraces all. Oh Say, What Is Truth?

Author: John Jaques, 1827–1900 Hymnal: Hymns of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints #272 (1985) Meter: Irregular Scripture: John 18:37-38 First Line: Oh say, what is truth? ’Tis the fairest gem Lyrics: 1. Oh say, what is truth? ’Tis the fairest gem That the riches of worlds can produce, And priceless the value of truth will be when The proud monarch’s costliest diadem Is counted but dross and refuse. 2. Yes, say, what is truth? ’Tis the brightest prize To which mortals or Gods can aspire. Go search in the depths where it glittering lies, Or ascend in pursuit to the loftiest skies: ’Tis an aim for the noblest desire. 3. The sceptre may fall from the despot’s grasp When with winds of stern justice he copes. But the pillar of truth will endure to the last, And its firm-rooted bulwarks outstand the rude blast And the wreck of the fell tyrant’s hopes. 4. Then say, what is truth? ’Tis the last and the first, For the limits of time it steps o’er. Tho the heavens depart and the earth’s fountains burst, Truth, the sum of existence, will weather the worst, Eternal, unchanged, evermore. Prepare the royal highway

Author: Frans Mikael Franzén, 1772-1847 Hymnal: Together in Song #346 (1999) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.6.6 Scripture: John 18:36 Lyrics: 1 Prepare the royal highway, the King of kings is near; let every hill and valley a level road appear. Then greet the king of glory foretold in sacred story: Refrain: O blest is he that came in God the Father's name! 2 God’s people, see him coming: your own eternal king! Palm branches strew before him; spread garments; shout and sing. God’s promise will not fail you; no more shall doubt assail you: [Refrain] 3 Then fling the gates wide open to greet your promised king; your king, yet every nation its tribute too should bring. All lands, bow down before him; all voices, thus adore him: [Refrain] 4 His is no earthly kingdom; it comes from heaven above. His rule is peace and freedom, and justice, truth, and love. So let your praise be sounding for kindness so abounding: [Refrain] Topics: Jerusalem; Jesus Christ Kingship; Jesus Christ Passion and Cross; Palm Sunday Languages: English Tune Title: BEREDEN VÄG FÖR HERRAN

The Star Proclaims the King Is Here

Author: Coelius Sedulius, 5th cent.; John Mason Neale, 1818-66 Hymnal: Lutheran Service Book #399 (2006) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: John 18:36-37 Lyrics: 1 The star proclaims the King is here; But, Herod, why this senseless fear? For He who offers heav'nly birth Seeks not the kingdoms of this earth. 2 The eastern sages saw from far And followed on His guiding star; And, led by light, to light they trod And by their gifts confessed their God. 3 Within the Jordan's sacred flood The heav'nly Lamb in meekness stood That He, of whom no sin was known, Might cleanse His people from their own. 4 And oh, what miracle divine, When water reddened into wine! He spoke the word, and forth it flowed In streams that nature ne'er bestowed. 5 For this Thy glad epiphany All glory, Jesus, be to Thee, Whom with the Father we adore, And Holy Spirit evermore. This Is the Night

Author: Peter Abélard; Richard Lyman Sturch Hymnal: Glory to God #206 (2013) Meter: 11.10.11.10 Scripture: John 18, 19:1-41 First Line: This is the night, dear friends, the night for weeping Lyrics: 1 This is the night, dear friends, the night for weeping, when powers of darkness overcome the day, the night the faithful mourn the weight of evil whereby our sins the Son of Man betray. 2 This night the traitor, wolf within the sheepfold, betrays himself into his victim’s will, the Lamb of God for sacrifice preparing: sin brings about the cure for sin’s own ill. 3 This night Christ institutes his holy supper, blest food and drink for heart and soul and mind; this night injustice joins its hand to treason’s, and buys the ransom-price of humankind. 4 This night the Lord by slaves shall be arrested, he who destroys our slavery to sin; accused of crime, to criminals be given, that judgment on the righteous Judge begin. 5 O make us sharers, Savior, of your Passion, that we may share your glory that shall be; let us pass through these three dark nights of sorrow to Easter’s laughter and its liberty. Pray for the church afflicted and oppressed

Author: F. Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Hymnal: Common Praise #559 (2000) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Scripture: John 18:19-40 Lyrics: 1 Pray for the church afflicted and oppressed, for all who suffer for the gospel's sake, that Christ may show us how to serve them best in that one kingdom Satan cannot shake. But how much more than us they have to give, who by their dying show us how to live! 2 Pray for Christ's dissidents, who daily wait, as Jesus waited in the olive grove, the unjust trial, the pre-determined fate, the world's contempt for reconciling love. Shall all they won for us, at such a cost, be by our negligence or weakness lost? 3 Pray that if times of testing should lay bare what sort we are, who call ourselves his own, we may be counted worthy then to wear, with quiet fortitude, Christ's only crown: the crown that in his saints he wears again the crown of thorns that signifies his reign.
