A Psalm of David

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 17 First Line: Jehovah hearken to the right Lyrics: 1 Jehovah hearken to the right, Attend unto my cry: Give ear unto my pray'r that goes, From lips that do not lie. 2 My Judgement from thy face let come, Thine eyes let see the right. Mine heart thou hast examined, And visited by night. 3 Thou hast me as in furnace try'd, And yet shalt nothing find: For that my mouth shall not transgress I am resolv'd in mind, 4 For what concerns the works of men, By lips words have I, The paths of him that doth destroy Observed heedfully. 5 Uphold thou my forth-going steps, Within thy beaten way: lest otherwise at any time My footsteps go astray. 6 Because that thou wilt answer me, O God on thee I call: Incline thou unto me thine ear, Hear thou my speech withal. [2] 7 Shew forth thy wondrous Grace on them That trust on thee repose: O thou that sav'st by thy right hand From self up-lifting foes. As th' apple of thine eye me keep, In thy wings shade me hide: 9 From wicked men my deadly foes, Who waste me on each side. 10 Clos'd in their fat they are, and they Boast with their mouth likewise. 11 They round us in our steps; on earth They set their bow'd down eyes. 12 He like a roaring lion is, That ready is to tear; In secret places sits as he A renting lion were. 13 Arise, do thou his face prevent, Make him bow down, O Lord: O set my soul at freedom from The wicked one thy sword. 14 From mortal men thy hand, o Lord, From men that mortal are; And of this passing world who have, Within this life their share. Thou with thine hidden treasure dost their bellies fill also: Their sons are fill'd, their residue They leave their babes unto. 15 In righteousness thy favour I Shall very clearly see: And waking with thine Image, I Shall satisfied be.

The Rights of Justice hear O Lord

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 17 Lyrics: 1. The Rights of Justice hear, O Lord, Attend unto my Cry; A gracious Ear my Pray'r afford, From Lips which do not lie. 2. O let my Sentence from thy Face Impartially proceed; The Rights, and Justice, of my Case, Let thine Eyes closely heed. 3. My Heart, and Reins, thou Lord hast try'd. In the still Night's Recess; And nothing found; I fix'd abide My Mouth shall not transgress. 4. However wicked Men decoy, Yet, taught by thy pure Word, The Paths of them that would destroy, I ever have abhor'd. 5. Thro' all my Walk uphold thou me. In thy most righteous Way; So shall my Steps unmoved be, And from thy Paths ne'er stray. 6. On Thee I call, for thou wilt hear; O God, I Thee beseech. To my Request incline thy Ear, And hear my humble Speech. Second Part 7. O thou, who sav'st, with thy Right-hand, Who Trust in Thee repose, From all that up against them stand; Thy wondrous Love disclose. 8. Keep, as the Apple of the Eye; Hide me beneath thy Wing: 9. From raging Foes, who round me ly, And me to Death would bring. 10. Enclos'd in Fat, they proudly boast. What Malice doth devife. 11. They now surround me with their Host, And couch with watchful Eyes; 12. As hungry Lyons raging fret, When greedy for their Prey; Or a young Lyon lurking sets, In some close covert Way. 13. Arise, his secret Plots controul, And cast him down, O Lord; At liberty, O, set my Soul, From wicked Men, thy Sword. 14. From mortal Man, thy Hand, O Lord, From worldly Men me save; Who in this present Life, and World, Their fading Portion have With thy hid Treasures, thou dost fill, Their Bellies: and their Race, Num'rous and pamper'd, Heir by Will The Bulk of their Encrease. 15. But as for me, in Righteousness, Thy smiling Face I'll see; And waking, with thine Image blest. Shall satisfied be.

To my just Plea and sad Complaint

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 17 Lyrics: 1 To my just Plea and sad Complaint, Attend, O righteous LORD! And to my Pray'r, which is unfeign'd, A gracious Ear afford. As thou my Ways hast seen, And I have upright been, So let my righteous Sentence be; For I resign my Cause to thee. 2 Thou, LORD, hast search'd my Heart by Day, And visited by Night; And on the strictest Trial found Its secret Motions right; Nor shalt thou only find My Heart to Good inclin'd, For I have purpos'd that my Tongue Shall be restrain'd and speak no Wrong. 3 I know what wicked Men would do, Their Safety to maintain; But me thy just and mild Commands, From bloody Paths restrain. That from thy righteous Way My Soul may never stray; Do thou my Innocence secure, And make my Footsteps ever sure. 4 Since heretofore I ne'er in vain To Thee my Pray'r address'd, O now, my GOD, incline thine Ear To this my just Request. The Wonders of thy Love Let me, thy Servant prove, Thou whose Right-hand doth oft engage, To quell the bold Oppressor's Rage. 5 Oh! keep me in thy tend'rest Care! Thy shelt'ring Wing stretch out, To guard me safe from savage Foes, That compass me about. Their wicked Tongues blaspheme, O LORD! thy holy Name, Enclos'd in their own Fat they lie, And GOD, and Man, at once defy. 61 Well may they boast, for they have now Encompass'd me around, Their Eyes at watch, their Bodies bow'd And couching on the Ground: In Treach'ry they engage, Or, like the Lion rage, When greedy searching for his Prey, He lurks within a Covert Way. 7 Arise, O LORD! defeat their Plots, Their swelling Rage controul: From wicked Men, who are thy Sword, Deliver thou my Soul: From Men who still employ Their Thoughts in worldly Joy; Who find their Portion's here below, And seek no higher Bliss to know. 8 Their Race is num'rous, that partake Their Substance while they live; Their Heirs survive, to whom they may The vast Remainder give. But in thy heav'nly Grace, I'll seek thy glorious Face, And when I 'wake, with Joy shall find, Thy Image dwelling in my Mind. reflected in my Soul. Do thou, just God, a just man's pray'r attend

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 17 Lyrics: 1 Do thou, just God, a just man's pray'r attend; O listen to the cry that comes unfeign'd; 2 At thy tribunal David asks redress, With pitying eye behold his sad distress. 3 Oft hast thou prov'd me in the silent night, And found the purpose of my heart was right; Oft view'd my secret soul, and found, in nought My tongue e'ar differ'd from my inmost thought. 4 Thy word my rule, and govern'd by thy fear; I from the works of impious men kept clear. 5 O still preserve me in the path I've trod; O let me firmly tread, all-gracious God. 6 Thee have I oft invok'd, for thou wilt hear; List, while I plead; incline thy gracious ear: 7 Shew me thy mercy, thou, whose potent arm Defends the soul, that trusts in thee, from harm. 8 Thy wings protectful o'er my steps extend; Me, as the apple of the eye, defend 9 From that abandon'd crew, my peace that wound; From those my foes, that compass me around; 10 Who, with their wealth elate, forget their God, And in their guilt are insolently proud. 11 In ev'ry secret place they lay the snare; And 'gainst my life their wily schemes prepare: 12 Like to the lion, that expects his prey, Or like his whelp, they keep my soul at bay. 13 Arise, O Lord; confound their villainy; From their destructive toils thy servant free; 14 Thy sword they are; thy wisdom lets them reign; Thou giv'st them here a wide, a large domain, In wealth they flow, and, when they breathe no more, Their num'rous sons possess their shining store. 15 For me, by innocence of heart I'll strive Still in thy favour, in thy light, to live; Enough, O gracious God, enough for me To view in bliis thy glorious majesty.
