Psalm 102

Author: Christopher Martin Idle (b. 1938) Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Despair and Trouble First Line: Lord, hear my prayer! My cry shall come before you Lyrics: 1 Lord, hear my prayer! My cry shall come before you; hide not your face when I am in distress. My life burns up; my days have lost their glory, drifting like smoke, in pain and helplessness. 2 Like some wild owl among deserted ruins, lonely I call while enemies curse on. Tears are my drink; God's wrath is my undoing; ashes my food till all my days are gone. 3 But you, O Lord, remain enthroned for ever; you will arise; in you shall kingdoms trust. Now is the time; your city pleads your favour, your servants love her stones, her very dust. 4 God will rebuild! Write this to sing tomorrow; lips yet unformed their Hallelujahs cry! Glory will dawn upon our world of sorrow, freeing from prison those condemned to die. 5 Then shall your name on Zion's hill be spoken; strangers shall fill Jerusalem with praise. But as for me, my strength is bruised and broken; spare me, O God; do not cut short my days! 6 Heaven and earth you formed in the beginning; these soon wear out - Lord, you remain the same! They shall be changed; your years endure unending; our children's children live to praise your name. Scripture: Psalm 102 Used With Tune: INTERCESSOR Text Sources: Praise Trust version

Before the throne of God above

Author: Charitie Lees De Chenez (1841-1923) Appears in 61 hymnals Topics: Despair and Trouble Lyrics: 1 Before the throne of God above I have a strong, a perfect plea, a great High Priest, whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, my name is written on his heart; I know that while in heaven he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart, no tongue can bid me thence depart. 2 When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look, and see him there who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Saviour died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God, the Just, is satisfied to look on him and pardon me, to look on him and pardon me. 3 Behold him there! the risen Lamb! my perfect, spotless Righteousness, the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace! One with my Lord, I cannot die; my soul is purchased by his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ, my Saviour and my God, with Christ, my Saviour and my God. Scripture: Hebrews 4:14 Used With Tune: BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD ABOVE

My Soul, Praise the LORD!

Meter: 10.10.11.11 Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: Despair First Line: My soul, praise the LORD! The LORD is most great Refrain First Line: Your Spirit, O LORD, makes life to abound Lyrics: 1 My soul, praise the LORD! The LORD is most great, with glory arrayed, majestic in state. The light is his garment, the skies form a tent, and over the waters his couriers are sent. 2 He rides on the clouds and wings of the storm. The lightning and wind his mission perform. Foundations of earth he forever has stayed; to cover it, oceans like garments were laid. 3 On mountains and plains the dark waters lay. They heard his rebuke and hurried away. He lifted the mountains, to valleys gave birth, set boundaries for seas that once covered the earth. Refrain: Your Spirit, O LORD, makes life to abound. The earth is renewed, and fruitful the ground. To God be all glory and wisdom and might. May God in his creatures forever delight. 4 God causes the springs of water to flow in streams from the hills to valleys below. The LORD gives the streams for all living things there, while birds with their singing enrapture the air. 5 Down mountains and hills your showers are sent. With fruit of your work the earth is content. You give grass for cattle and food for our toil, enriching our labors with bread, wine, and oil. 6 The trees that the LORD has planted are fed, and over the earth their branches are spread. They keep in their shelter the birds of the air. The life of each creature God keeps in his care. [Refrain] 7 The seasons are fixed by wisdom divine. The slow-changing moon shows forth God's design. The sun in its circuit its Maker obeys and, running its journey, hastes not nor delays. 8 The LORD makes the night, when, leaving their lair, the lions go forth, God's bounty to share. The LORD makes the morning, when beasts steal away, when we are beginning the work of the day. 9 How many and wise the works of the LORD! The earth with its wealth of creatures is stored. The sea bears in safety the ships to and fro; Leviathan plays in the waters below. 10 Your creatures all look to you for their food. Your hand opens wide, they gather the good. When you hide your face, LORD, in anguish they yearn; when you stop their breathing, to dust they return. [Refrain] 11 Before the LORD's might earth trembles and quakes. The mountains are rent, and smoke from them breaks. I promise to worship the LORD all my days. Yes, while I have being, my God I will praise. 12 Rejoicing in God, my thought shall be sweet. May sinners depart in ruin complete. My soul, praise the LORD God - his name be adored. Come, praise him, all people, and worship the LORD. Scripture: Psalm 104 Used With Tune: HANOVER Text Sources: Psalter, 1912, alt.

Amid the Thronging Worshipers

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 10 hymnals Topics: Despair Lyrics: 1 Amid the thronging worshipers the Lord, our God, I bless; before his people gathered here his name will I confess. Come, praise him, all who fear the Lord, the children of his grace; with reverence sound his glories forth and bow before his face. 2 The burden of the sorrowful the Lord will not despise; he has not turned from those who mourn, he listens to their cries. His goodness makes me join the throng where saints his praise proclaim, and there will I fulfill my vows with those who fear his name. 3 He feeds with good the humble soul and satisfies the meek, and they shall live and praise the Lord who for his mercy seek. The ends of all the earth will hear, the nations seek the Lord; they worship him, the King of kings, in earth and heaven adored. Used With Tune: BOVINA Text Sources: Psalter, 1912

O send thy light forth and thy truth

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 35 hymnals Topics: Despair and Trouble Lyrics: 1 O send thy light forth and thy truth; let them be guides to me, and bring me to thine holy hill, even where thy dwellings be. 2 Then will I to God's altar go, to God my chiefest joy: yea, God, my God, thy name to praise my harp I will employ. 3 Why art thou then cast down, my soul? what should discourage thee? Any why with vexing thoughts art thou disquieted in me? 4 Still trust in God; for him to praise good cause I yet shall have: he of my countenance is the health, my God that doth me save. Why do the Proud insult the Poor

Appears in 29 hymnals Topics: Hope and despair in death Lyrics: 1 Why do the Proud insult the Poor, And boast the large Estates they have? How vain are Riches to secure Their haughty Owners from the Grave! 2 They can't redeem one Hour from Death With all the Wealth in which they trust; Nor give a dying Brother Breath, When GOD commands him down to Dust. 3 There the dark Earth and dismal Shade Shall clasp their naked Bodies round; That Flesh so delicately fed, Lies cold, and moulders in the Ground. 4 Like thoughtless Sheep the Sinner dies, Laid in the Grave for Worms to eat: The Saints shall in the Morning rise, And find th' Oppressor at their Feet. 5 His Honours perish in the Dust, And Pomp, and Beauty, Birth and Blood: That glorious Day exalts the Just To full Dominion o'er the Proud. 6 My Saviour shall my Life restore, And raise me from my dark Abode; My Flesh and Soul shall part no more, But dwell for ever near my GOD. Scripture: Psalm 49
