How Long, O Lord

Author: Barbara Woollett, 1937- Appears in 14 hymnals Topics: Adversity First Line: How long, O Lord, will you forget Lyrics: 1 How long, O Lord, will you forget an answer to my prayer? No tokens of your love I see, your face is turned away from me; I wrestle with despair. 2 How long, O Lord, will you forsake and leave me in this way? When will you come to my relief? My heart is overwhelmed with grief, by evil night and day. 3 How long, O Lord— But you forgive, with mercy from above. I find that all your ways are just, I learn to praise you and to trust in your unfailing love. Scripture: Psalm 13 Used With Tune: HOW LONG Text Sources: Scripture text

In Christ We Live

Author: Brian Wren, 1936- Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Adversity First Line: In Christ we live, whose life was more Lyrics: 1 In Christ we live, whose life was more than teaching love and doing good. In Christ we meet, whose trust in God derision, fear, and hate withstood. 2 In Christ we hope, whose death exposed the evil bent, the tragic flaw in leaders, followers, and friends, religion, government, and law. 3 In Christ we grieve the trampled lives of people shunned, abused, oppressed. In Christ we ow to serve the weak and lobby for the dispossessed. 4 And if we find out how and when to show them they are not alone, we will not proudly be their voice, but humbly help them find their own. 5 Their kindness, anger, or distrust are angels, calling us to see the fear, the need to have and hold, that frame our own captivity. 6 In Christ we live, and life is more than learning love and doing good, so praise, and pray, and trust in God who makes the earth our neighborhood. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 Used With Tune: O WALY WALY

Beside the Great Cathedrals

Author: Daniel Charles Damon Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Adversity Lyrics: 1 Beside the great cathedrals we huddle in the rain, or underneath the bridges till busy folks complain. We seek a little shelter, a coin to buy some bread, and Jesus waits here with us. He shares our stony bed. 2 He sings on city sidewalks, he sits on curbs alone, he holds a sign and listens for footsteps on the stone. He sings down by the river, a spiritual, a blues, with mothers and with fathers who pay no union dues. 3 Friend, have you seen him naked, in prison, or in pain, and have you seen him shivering with us out in the rain? Friend, have you seen him sleeping outside cathedral doors, and have you heard him singing with those the world ignores? 4 Sit down with us and listen to stories we can tell of death and resurrection, of heaven and of hell. Then strive to love the beggars who gather at your door, and see in us our Savior, the rabbi of the poor. Scripture: Matthew 25:31-46 Used With Tune: CHARTRES STREET

Naked as from the Earth we came

Appears in 118 hymnals Topics: Prosperity and Adversity Lyrics: 1 Naked, as from the Earth we came, And crept to Life at first, We to the Earth return again, And mingle with our Dust. 2 The dear Delights we here enjoy, And fondly call our own, Are but short Favours borrow'd Now, To be repaid Anon. 3 'Tis God that lifts our Comforts high, Or sinks them in the Grave, He gives, and (blessed by his Name) He takes but what he gave. 4 Peace, all our angry Passions, then Let each rebellious Sigh Be silent at his Sov'reign Will, And ev'ry Murmur die. 5 If smiling Mercy crown our Lives, Its Praises shall be spread, And we'll adore the Justice too That strikes our Comforts dead. Scripture: Job 1:21
