Spirit-Child Jesus

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Worship and Song #3062 (2011) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Topics: Hearts; Hearts First Line: Spirit-child Jesus, in joyful refrain Lyrics: 1 Spirit-child Jesus, in joyful refrain, echoing songs over Bethlehem's plain, what will we do when the carols all fade? "Take up my song: Glory! Be not afraid!" 2 Spirit-child Jesus, in animal shed, smiling at shepherds from strange borrowed bed, what will we do when the manger's away? "Take up my story, and live it each day!" 3 Spirit-child Jesus, in starry white light, twinkling on evergreens, shiny and bright, what will we do when the branches are shorn? "Take up my cross that for you I have borne!" 4 Spirit-child Jesus, in vigilant eyes, awaiting the gift bearing Love's great surprise, what will we do when the presents are done? "Take up my presence, for I am God's Son!" 5 Spirit-child Jesus, in hot tongues of flame, melting the candle alight in your name, What will we do when the candle is gone? "Take up my light! Pass it on, pass it on!" Scripture: Luke 2:6-7 Languages: English Tune Title: SPIRIT-CHILD

Retirement and Meditation

Author: Dr. Doddridge Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CCCXXIX (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Communion with Saints with our own hearts First Line: Return, my roving heart, return Lyrics: 1 Return, my roving heart, return, And chase these shadowy forms no more Seek out some solitude to mourn, And thy forsaken God implore. 2 O thou great God, whose piercing eye Distinctly marks each deep recess; In these sequester'd hours draw nigh, And with thy presence fill the place. 3 Thro' all the windings of my heart, My search let heavenly wisdom guide; And still its radiant beams impart, 'Till all be search'd and purify'd. 4 Then, with the Visits of thy love, Vouchsafe my inmost soul to cheer; 'Till every grace shall join to prove, That God hath fix'd his dwelling there. Sincerity profest, And Grace try'd; or, The Heart-searching God

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #258 (1740) Topics: God Heart searching; Heart known to God; Trial of our hearts First Line: My GOD, what inward Grief I feel Lyrics: 1 My GOD, what inward Grief I feel When impious Men transgress thy Will! I mourn to hear their Lips profane Take thy tremendous Name in vain. 2 Does not my Soul detest and hate The Sons of Malice and Deceit? Those that oppose thy Laws and Thee, I count them Enemies to me. 3 Lord, search my Soul, try ev'ry Thought; Though my own Heart accuse me not Of walking in a false Disguise, I beg the Trial of thine Eyes. 4 Doth secret Mischief lurk within? Do I indulge some unknown Sin? O turn my Feet whene'er I stray, And lead me in thy perfect Way. Scripture: Psalm 139 Languages: English

Psalm 139 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.315 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Trial of our hearts; God heart-searching; Heart known to God First Line: 'Twas from thy hand, my God, I came Lyrics: 'Twas from thy hand, my God, I came, A work of such a curious frame In me thy fearful wonders shine, And each proclaims thy skill divine. Thine eyes did all my limbs survey, Which yet in dark confusion lay; Thou saw'st the daily growth they took, Formed by the model of thy book. By thee my growing parts were named, And what thy sovereign counsels framed- The breathing lungs, the beating heart- Was copied with unerring art. At last, to show my Maker's name, God stamped his image on my frame, And in some unknown moment joined The finished members to the mind. There the young seeds of thought began, And all the passions of the man: Great God, our infant nature pays Immortal tribute to thy praise. Lord, since in my advancing age I've acted on life's busy stage, Thy thoughts of love to me surmount The power of numbers to recount. I could survey the ocean o'er, And count each sand that makes the shore, Before my swiftest thoughts could trace The num'rous wonders of thy grace. These on my heart are still impressed, With these I give my eyes to rest; And at my waking hour I find God and his love possess my mind. Scripture: Psalm 139 Languages: English
