Welcome God's And Mary's Son

Author: Caspar Neumann, 1648-1715; Milo Mahan, 1819-1870 Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #7207 Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Lyrics: 1. Welcome God’s and Mary’s Son Jesu, who to earth descending, Didst our nature with Thine own Join in union never ending: Save us from th’oppressor’s rod, Oh our Brother and our God! 2. All was lost in Adam’s fall; All in Thee is now recovered. Once to sin and death a thrall, O’er the pit of hell I hovered: Now I learn to cling to Thee— Once with Adam, one with me. 3. Out of Heav’n didst Thou come down; Out of hell my soul deliver. Scarce a stall in David’s town, Welcomed Thee; but, gracious Giver, Grant to us beyond the sky, Each a starry home on high. 4. Cleaves my soul to dross and dust; Help me, Lord, I sink and perish; Purge my heart of earthly lust, Life divine within me cherish; Dweller in the manger, Thou, Dwell Thyself within me now. 5. Scant and mean the swaddling clothes, Limbs divine, like Thine, to cover! Be the sin my spirit loathes Bound in them and covered over: But myself be clothed in Thee, Jesu, by Thy Spirit free. 6. Ah! the pain that came to Thee, In the hard and narrow manger! May my spirit cradled be In Thy heart, secure from danger, When my weary head is hid Underneath the coffin lid. 7. Is it still the devil’s lust Souls of men in sin to smother? Yet in this I put my trust— God became my Friend and Brother! Heart and mind in Thee to dwell, Help me, mine Immanuel! Jesus, my Redeemer, lives

Author: Catherine Winkworth, 1827-78 Hymnal: Together in Song #366 (1999) Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives, death is overcome and banished. O what joy this knowledge gives! Now my fears of death have vanished; though its solemn hour will come, he will take me safely home. 2 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives; likewise I to life shall waken. Endless life my Saviour gives; shall my courage then be shaken? I belong to him, my head; can he rise and leave me dead? 3 No, I am too closely bound by my hope to Christ for ever; faith's strong hand the rock has found, grasped it, and will leave it never; even death now cannot part from its Lord the trusting heart. 4 I am flesh and must return to the dust whence I am taken; but by faith I now discern that from death I shall awaken with my Saviour to abide in his glory, at his side. 5 I shall see God with these eyes, shall behold my blessèd Saviour; I myself shall ten arise, and remain with God for ever; glorified I shall ascend to the life that has no end. Jesus Christ, My Sure Defense

Author: C. Winkworth, 1827-78 Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary #532 (1996) Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Lyrics: 1 Jesus Christ, my sure Defense And my Savior, ever liveth; Knowing this, my confidence Rests upon the hope it giveth Though the night of death be fraught Still with many an anxious thought. 2 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives; I, too, unto life shall waken. Endless joy my Savior gives; Shall my courage, then, be shaken? Shall I fear? How could the Head Rise and leave His members dead? 3 Nay, too closely am I bound Unto Him by hope forever; Faith's strong hand the Rock hath found, Grasped it, and will leave it never. Even death now cannot part From its Lord the trusting heart. 4 I am flesh and must return Unto dust, whence I am taken; But by faith I now discern That from death I shall awaken With my Savior to abide In His glory, at His side. 5 Glorified, I shall anew With this flesh then be enshrouded; In this body I shall view God, my Lord, with eyes unclouded, In this flesh I then shall see Jesus Christ eternally. 6 Then these eyes my Lord shall know, My Redeemer and my Brother; In His love my soul shall glow I myself, and not another! Then the weakness I feel here Shall forever disappear. 7 They who sorrow here and moan There in gladness shall be reigning; Earthly here the seed is sown, There immortal life attaining. Here our sinful bodies die, Glorified to dwell on high. 8 Then take comfort and rejoice, For His members Christ will cherish. Fear not, they will hear His voice; Dying, they shall never perish; For the very grave is stirred When the trumpet's blast is heard. 9 Laugh to scorn the gloomy grave And at death no longer tremble; He, the Lord, who came to save Will at last His own assemble. They will go their Lord to meet, Treading death beneath their feet. 10 O that ye would set your hearts High above all earthy pleasures. Take instead what He imparts Who hath giv'n you lasting treasures. There your heart's affections give Where ye shall forever live. Jesus Christ, my sure defence

Author: Miss Winkworth; Louisa Henrietta of Brandenburg Hymnal: Church Book #195 (1890) Meter: 7.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Jesus Christ, my sure defense And my Saviour, ever liveth; Knowing this, my confidence Rests upon the hope it giveth, Though the night of death be fraught Still with many an anxious thought. 2 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives! I too, life must waken: He will have me where He is; Shall my courage then be shaken? Shall I fear? Or could the Head Rise and leave its members dead? 3 Nay, too closely am I bound Unto Him by hope for ever; Faith's strong hand the Rock hath found, Grasped it, and will leave it never; Not the ban of death can part From its Lord the trusting heart. 4 What now sickens, mourns, and sighs, Christ with Him in glory bringeth: Earthly is the seed and dies, Heavenly from the grave it springeth. Natural is the death we die, Spiritual our life on high. 5 Saviour, draw away our heart Now from pleasures base and hollow, Let us there with Thee have part, Here on earth Thy foot-steps follow. Fix our hearts beyond the skies, Whither we ourselves would rise.
