From distant Times thou hast remained

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XC (1767) Scripture: Psalm 90 Lyrics: 1 From distant Times thou hast remained, O LORD, our sure abiding Place; And by thy mighty Arm sustained, From Age to Age, thy chosen Race. Before the lofty Hills appeared, Or e'er thy Pow'r the Earth did frame, Thou wert as LORD supreme revered; And thou art evermore the same. 2 Frail Man, at thy fierce Indignation, Is turn'd to Dust, of which he's made; And when thou wouldst renew his Station, Thy Will is instantly obey'd. A Thousand Years to thee not seeming, Longer than as a fleeting Day, Or Midnight Watch, to Men when dreaming, Whose Hours in Silence waste away. 3 Thou sweep'st us off by thy great Power, We vanish hence like airy Dreams; At first we grow like some fair Flower That feels the Sun's refreshing Beams: But howsoever fresh and blooming, Its Beauty in the Morning shows, 'Tis soon cut down, and Flames consuming, Destroy it e'er the Ev'ning close. 4 We by thine Anger are distressed, And at thy Wrath we are dismay'd; Our Crimes, whene'er we have transgressed, Are all before thy Presence laid. Thy dreadful Indignation lasting, Our drooping Days in Grief we spend; Our Years in pining Sorrow wasting, Break off like Tales that quickly end. 5 Our Term in Sev'nty Years is ended, An Age which very few survive; But if that Term should be extended, And we at Eighty should arrive; Yet then our boasted Vigour failing, We waste away in Grief and Pain, The Hand of Death is soon prevailing, And we no longer may remain. Part II 6 But who, O LORD, thy sore Displeasure Does with a due Regard revere? And yet thou dost thine Anger measure, As more or less we learn to fear. LORD! let us be by thee respected, And teach us our short Date to mind; That, by true Wisdom still directed, Our Hearts may be to GOD inclin'd. 7 Turn thee, O GOD, to us distressed, And to thy Servants gracious be; Let us with Mercy soon be blessed, And make us still rejoice in thee. Since thou hast us with Sorrows vexed, LORD, wipe away our former Tears; And let us be no more perplexed, But comfort us with happier Years. 8 Let this thy wond'rous Work displayed, To all thy Servants, LORD< be shown; And, down to distant Times conveyed, O let thy glorious Pow'r be known! Be thy bright Rays to us inclined, And kindly give our Work Success; The glorious Work we have designed, Do thou, O LORD, vouchsafe to bless. A Prayer of Moses, the Man of God

Hymnal: The Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs of the Old and New-Testament #PXC (1742) Scripture: Psalm 90 First Line: Thou Lord our stay hast been Lyrics: 1 Thou Lord our stay hast been, an house Of habitation; From generation unto us, To generation. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth Or ever by thy word, Thou didst create the world and earth From aye to aye art God. 3 Thou dost by bruising to decay Turn miserable men; Ye sons of men, then dost thou say, Return ye back again. 4 For while a thousand years do last, It is but in thy sight As yesterday when it is past, And as a watch by night. 5 Thou dost them bear away like as A flood that overflows: Like sheep they are, and as the grass, Which in the morning grows. 6 Which in the morn is flourishing, And springing up doth rise; Which is cut down at evening, It withers up likewise. 7 Because by reason of thine ire We wasted are away; And by thine anger's burning fire We speedily decay. 8 Thou hast set our iniquities Before thee in thy sight; Our secret evils are likewise Before thy face's light. 9 Because in thy displeasure all Our days away are roll'd; We spend away our years withal Like as a tale that's told. 10 For threescore years and ten the days Of our few years contain: Or if through strength to fourscore rise, Their strength is grief and pain. For soon it's gone, and hence we pass, 11 O who is he doth know Thine anger's strength? according as Thy fear, thy wrath is so 12 O give thou us instruction To number so our days; That we our hearts may thereupon Turn into wisdom's ways. 13 Jehovah turn thy self again, How long yet shall it be? And let it thee repent for them That servants are to thee. 14 O satisfy us freely with Thy free benignity; That so through all our days we may Joy and make melody. 15 According to the days wherein Affliction we have had; And years wherein ill we have seen, Now also make us glad. 16 Unto thy servants, O do thou Thy handy-work declare. And shew thy comely glory to Those that their children are. 17 The beauty of Jehovah thus Our God let on us be: Confirm'd our handy-work on us, Confirm'd be it by thee. Languages: English

Almighty Lord, e'er since the world began

Hymnal: New Version of the Psalms of David #XC (1756) Scripture: Psalm 90 Lyrics: 1 Almighty Lord, e'er since the world began, Great hath been thy beneficence to man; E'er since this earth first run her annual round, In thee her thankless sons defence have found. 2 Still thou'rt the same, and ever wast the same, Ere yet the world assum'd this beauteous frame, Ere yet the high, the lofty hills appear'd; Ere yet the glad'ning day gay mortals chear'd; Ere spread dun night her horrors all abroad, Thou art the same, the everlasting God. 3 But thou hast giv'n short space to man on earth; Soon fleet the winged minutes from his birth To that dark hour, when all his schemes are vain, And to his parent-dust he goes again. 4 'Fore thee glide swift a thousand years away; To thee they seem a fleeting winter's day; Sudden they pass, and strait no more are seen, And leave no trace, to tell us, they have been. 5 They roll impetuous like a rapid stream; Insensibly they leave us like a dream; Well to the grass we may our lives compare; 6 The grass that looks at morn so fresh, so fair, That with it's verdant spires enchants the sight, But hangs the head, and withers ere 'tis night. 7 Yet not with life's short period we're distrest, As when thy dreadful anger strikes the breast; 8 For whate'er errors in our bosoms roll, Whate'er base pass9ons hold in chains the soul, Howe'er conceal'd, or kept from open day, Does thy all-seeing eye, O God, survey; 9 And while thy vengeance strikes us with despair, Swifter than thought, life vanishes to air. 10 For sev'nty years while goes his rounds the sun, To man 'tis giv'n his stated course to run; Haply his strength holds cut ten winters more; But then all solid joys of life are o'er; On feeble age unnumber'd cares attend, Unnumber'd griefs that but with life shall end; 11 And, if our God strict justice shou'd demand, Ah! who can bear his dread avenging hand? 12 Teach us our short-liv'd period to discern, That we the road, to heav'n, to bliss may learn; 13 Benign O hear us, and thine anger cease; Return, O Lord, and calm our souls to peace. 14 O let thy mercy fill our hearts with joy, That our remaining hours we may employ 15 In peaceful scenes, devoid of griefs, of fears, Free from the mis'ries of our former years. 16 Thy glorious works, the wonders of thy pow'r, Shew to thy servants, that they may adore; And, that their off-spring may thy laws obey, Thy great, thy awful attributes, display. 17 And let, O God, thy clemency divine With happy influence on thy chosen shine, That ev'ry action of our life may prove, Thy grace directs us, prospers us thy love. To heav'n who trust his fortunes and his life

Hymnal: New Version of the Psalms of David #XCI (1756) Scripture: Psalm 90 Lyrics: 1 To heav'n who trusts his fortunes and his life, Tho' rage around contention, broil and strife; Tho' wild uproar and dire confusion sway, His God will be his firm support and stay. 2 Thou then bad fate and her assaults defy; Thou to thy God for safe protection fly; Call him thy refuge, on his pow'r depend, And he will ever, ever be thy friend. 3 From dark designs of crafty men he'll free, From all their toils will give thee liberty; In fatal times, when rage diseases round, Thy great preserver he will still be found. 4 O'er thee his shelt'ring wings shall he expand; Firm, firm beneath almighty care thou'lt stand; Nor ever to thy adverse fortunes yield, The God of battles, thy defence and shield. 5 Secure he'll guide thee in the gloomy night, From dangers safe, as in the mid-day-light; Secure he'll lead thee in the open day, Nor foes, nor wars, nor terrors, shall dismay. 7 In battle tho' ten thousand round thee fall, Thy guarded heart no perils shall appall. 8 Mean while with joy the wicked thou shalt view Sink in the mis'ries that their crimes pursue. 9 For heav'n's high God thy refuge thou hast made, And on his mercy hast relied for aid; 10 Therefore thy dwelling hears no big alarm; No sad mischance thy peaceful soul shall harm: 11 And to his angels he has giv'n command, To watch thy steps, to guide thee by the hand; O'er wilds, o'er cliffs, o'er desarts, thee to lead, That, free from bruises, thou secure may'st tread: 13 That thou not fear, whene'er thou pass the brake, The crested basilisk or scaly snake; That thou undaunted may'st the tiger meet, And crush the lordly lion with thy feet. 14 For says th' almighty Lord, "'Cause me he loves, "My name adores, and my dread law approves, "His soul I'll guard, and soon exalt him high; 15 "To me, his God, he in distress shall cry; "Him strait I'll hear, from all his terrors free, "And raise him to imperial dignity; 16 "A length of days upon him shall attend, "And joys immortal, joys that ne'er shall end."
