Let me but hear my Saviour say

Appears in 157 hymnals Topics: Assistance against Temptations Lyrics: 1 Let me but hear my Saviour say, Strength shall be equal to thy Day; Then I rejoice in deep Distress, Leaning on all-sufficient Grace. 2 I glory in Infirmity, That Christ's own Pow'r may rest on me; When I am weak, then am I strong, Grace is my Shield, and Christ my Song. 3 I can do all Things, or can bear All Suff'rings, if my Lord be there; Sweet Pleasures mingle with the Pains While his Left-Hand my Head sustains. 4 But if the Lord be once withdrawn, And we attempt the Work alone; When new Temptations spring and rise, We find how great our Weakness is. 5 So Sampson, when his Hair was lost, Met the Philistines to his Cost; Shook his vain Limbs with sad Surprize, Made feeble Fight, and lost his Eyes. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Our Lord, You Were Sent

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Sin and Temptation First Line: Our Lord, You were seent to a place wild and vast Lyrics: Our Lord, you were sent to a place wild and vast To ponder your mission, to pray and to fast; Then hungry and weary, you faced night and day The subtle temptations to turn from God’s way. How could it be wrong to want bread on the shelf? To seek, in one’s serving, to first serve one’s self? But by God’s own word you remained ever sure: It’s only in God that our lives are secure. How could it be wrong to step out and to dare, To prove with great drama the depths of God’s care? But you knew God’s word, true since all time began: It’s wrong to expect God to work by our plan. How could it be wrong to just once bow the knee, To shake hands with sin to achieve victory? Yet you made it clear that no matter the cost: Your path was obedience, your way was the cross. Our Lord, in your struggle you chose to obey; God’s word filled your heart and you trusted God’s way. Now risen, you save us from sins that destroy; You give us your Spirit, your peace and your joy. Scripture: Hebrews 2:18 Used With Tune: FOUNDATION

All mortal vanities, begone

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 20 hymnals Topics: Deliverance from temptation; Complaint of temptation; Temptations of the devil Lyrics: All mortal vanities, begone, Nor tempt my eyes, nor tire my ears; Behold, amidst th' eternal throne, A vision of the Lamb appears. [Glory his fleecy robe adorns, Marked with the bloody death he bore; Seven are his eyes, and seven his horns, To speak his wisdom and his power. Lo! he receives a sealed book From him that sits upon the throne; Jesus, my Lord, prevails to look On dark decrees and things unknown.] All the assembling saints around Fall worshipping before the Lamb, And in new songs of gospel sound Address their honors to his name. [The Joy, the shout, the harmony, Flies o'er the everlasting hills "Worthy art thou alone," they cry, To read the book, to loose the seals."] Our voices join the heav'nly strain, And with transporting pleasure sing, "Worthy the Lamb that once was slain, To be our Teacher and our King!" His words of prophecy reveal Eternal counsels, deep designs; His grace and vengeance shall fulfil The peaceful and the dreadful lines. Thou hast redeemed our souls from hell With thine invaluable blood; And wretches that did once rebel Are now made fav'rites of their God. Worthy for ever is the Lord, That died for treasons not his own, By every tongue to be adored, And dwell upon his Father's throne! Scripture: Revelation 5:6-9

Bless'd be the everlasting God

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 190 hymnals Topics: Deliverance from temptation; Complaint of temptation; Temptations of the devil Lyrics: Blest be the everlasting God, The Father of our Lord; Be his abounding mercy praised, His majesty adored. When from the dead he raised his Son, And called him to the sky, He gave our souls a lively hope That they should never die. What though our inbred sins require Our flesh to see the dust, Yet as the Lord our Savior rose, So all his followers must. There's an inheritance divine Reserved against that day; 'Tis uncorrupted, undefiled, And cannot waste away. Saints by the power of God are kept Till the salvation come; We walk by faith as strangers here, Till Christ shall call us home. Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3-5

Rise, my soul, to watch and pray

Meter: 7.6.7.6.6.6.6 Appears in 27 hymnals Topics: Temptations Lyrics: 1 Rise, my soul, to watch and pray, From thy sleep awake thee, Lest at last the evil day Suddenly o'ertake thee: For the foe, well we know, Oft his harvest reapeth, While the Christian sleepeth. 2 Watch against the Devil's snares, Lest asleep he find thee; For, indeed, no pains he spares To deceive and blind thee; Satan's prey oft are they Who, securely sleeping, No good watch are keeping. 3 Watch against the world, that frowns Darkly to dismay thee; Watch when she thy wishes crowns, Smiling to betray thee; Watch and see thou art free From false friends, that charm thee, While they seek to harm thee. 4 Watch against thyself, my soul, See thou do not stifle Grace that should thy thoughts control, Nor with mercy trifle; Pride and sin lurk within All thy hopes to scatter; List not when they flatter. 7 But, while watching, also see That thou pray unceasing, For the Lord must make thee free, Strength and faith increasing, So to do service true; Let not sloth enslave thee; Pray, and God will save thee. 6 Yea, indeed, He bids us pray, Promising to hear us, E'er to be our staff and stay, Ever to be near us. Ere we plead, will He heed, Strengthen, keep, defend us, And deliv'rance send us. Used With Tune: MERCY

Give wisdom and deliver me according to your faithful word. 2 Instructed in your holy law, to praise your word I lift my voice. Come, LORD, and be my present help, for your commandments are my choice. 3 For your salvation I have longed, my joy is in your law, O LORD. Now, let me live, your praise to sing; sustain me by your holy word. 4 Your servant, like a wandering sheep, has lost the path and gone astray.
