O God, Send Heralds

Author: Elisabeth Burrowes, 1883-1975 Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 6 hymnals Topics: Pentecost 6 First Line: O God, send heralds who will never falter Lyrics: 1 O God, send heralds who will never falter, Who dare to walk where Christ has set his feet, Who know the Church as beacon and as altar Where human need and your abundance meet. 2 Not to be served, but only to be serving, To feed the hunger in the human heart, To know that love which comes without deserving, That love which only Jesus can impart. 3 Empires have come, have flourished and departed, But still your Church, as witness to your way, Lives on in darkness, light of the true-hearted, And calls to action those whose feet would stay. 4 Send heralds, then, in whom your heart rejoices; Send those who hear the call that sets us free, With eager hearts and jubilating voices Each making answer, "Here am I! Send me." Used With Tune: INTERCESSOR Text Sources: Ten New Hymns on the Bible

Unless the Lord Constructs the House

Author: Mollie Knight Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: Year B, Ordinary Time after Pentecost, November 6-12 Lyrics: 1 Unless the Lord constructs the house, the builders work in vain; the Lord alone designs and builds foundations that remain. 2 Unless the Lord is keeping watch, the city cannot stand; the sentry guards the gates in vain without God's mighty hand. 3 In vain you labor night and day, by constant care oppressed; the Lord supplies your loved ones' needs and grants them sleep and rest. 4 The Lord designed the family, providing earthly love; our children are God's heritage - a gift from heaven above. 5 Like weapons in a warrior's hand are those who bear our name; with them we face a hostile world assured and free from shame. Scripture: Psalm 127 Used With Tune: ST. ANNE

I Will Exalt My God and King

Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 17 hymnals Topics: Year A, Ordinary Time after Pentecost, July 31-August 6; Year C, Ordinary Time after Pentecost, November 6-12 Lyrics: 1 I will exalt my God and King, and I will ever praise your name. I will extol you every day and evermore your praise proclaim. You, LORD, are greatly to be praised; your greatness is beyond all thought. From age to age your people tell the mighty wonders you have wrought. 2 On your most glorious majesty and on your deeds my mind will dwell. Your deeds will fill the world with awe, and all your greatness I will tell. Your matchless goodness and your grace your people will commemorate; and all your truth and righteousness our joyful song will celebrate. 3 The LORD our God is rich in grace, tender to us, compassionate. His anger is most slow to rise; his love and kindness are most great. The LORD is good in all his ways; his creatures know his constant care. To all his works his love extends; all creatures in his mercies share. 4 All you have made will praise you, LORD; your mighty acts your saints will show, till all the peoples on the earth the splendor of your kingdom know. Eternal is your kingdom, LORD, forever strong and ever sure; while generations rise and die, your glorious reign will still endure. 5 The LORD is faithful to his word; he will extend his gracious hand. The LORD upholds the faltering feet and makes the weak securely stand. The eyes of all look up to you for food and drink, which you supply; your open hand is bountiful, and every need you satisfy. 6 The LORD is just in all his ways; in all his works the LORD is kind, and all who call on him in truth in him a present helper find. He will fulfill the heart's desire of those who fear him and obey. The LORD will surely hear their cry, will save them when to him they pray. 7 The LORD in grace preserves his saints, redeeming those who love his name. The wicked he will overthrow and put his enemies to shame. My mouth will sing the glorious praise of God, whom earth and heaven adore. Let every creature praise his name forever and forevermore! We Will Tell Each Generation

Author: Michael Perry; Martin Tel Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Year A, Ordinary Time after Pentecost, November 6-12; Year B, Ordinary Time after Pentecost, July 31-August 6 Lyrics: 1 We will tell each generation all that you, our God, have done; how you called and led your people, chose us out to be your own. 2 Tell the time of our rebelling-- how we wandered from your way, how your law our love compelling taught us humbly to obey. 3 Tell how once, when spite and terror threatened to engulf our land, you defended us with vigor, saved us by a mighty hand. 4 Tell the grace that falls from heaven, angels' food as faith's reward; tell how sins may be forgiven through the mercy of the Lord. 5 We will tell each generation all that you, our God, have done. As a shepherd you have led us; by your hand still lead your own. Scripture: Psalm 78 Used With Tune: ARISE (RESTORATION)
