How Foolish They Were

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Faith That Lets Us Sing #44 (2017) Meter: 10.8.5.5.8 Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12 First Line: How foolish they were who came from the East Lyrics: 1 How foolish they were, who came from the East, how foolish, and yet, oh, so wise, to travel so far because of a star they saw as a sign in the skies. 2 How foolish, yet wise, to see in a child the ruler God’s prophets foretold! What folly, what joy to give a poor boy their frankincense, myrrh, precious gold! 3 How foolish, yet wise, to trust in a dream, a powerful king disobey; to see through the plan of this evil man, and seek an alternative way. 4 May we be such fools, may we be so wise as those who once came from the East, to see in each face, in every poor place, the Child in the lost and the least. 5 As light from the star has opened our eyes the pain of the poor now revealed, may we dare to care, to give and to share, that one day the world may be healed. Though Shepherds Heard the Angels

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Faith That Lets Us Sing #76 (2017) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Scripture: Matthew 2:9-11 Lyrics: 1 Though shepherds heard the angels, the wise men saw a star, a long-awaited signal, and so they traveled far to lay down precious treasures before a little child. His mother bid them welcome, received their gifts, and smiled. 2 Yet Mary must have questioned such gifts for one so small. He could have used a blanket, a rattle, or a ball, not incense for a temple or myrrh for one who’s dead; or gold enough for monarchs to crown his little head! 3 Was this an angel’s warning, a prophet’s clever ruse, to hint at her son’s future and all her thoughts confuse? She paused and, for a moment, was overcome with dread; then Jesus, laughing, smiling, filled her with joy instead. 4 Whatever comes, thought Mary, my son is in God’s care; no matter what his future, God always will be there. She thanked God for these wise men who traveled from afar to bring her son strange presents because of one great star. Topics: Epiphany Languages: English Tune Title: BAINTON
