Agnes Burton Deans

1819 - 1858 Author of "Ho, reapers of life's harvest" in Songs for Young People Woodbury, Isaac Baker. (Beverly, Massachusetts, October 23, 1819--October 26, 1858, Columbia, South Carolina). Music editor. As a boy, he studied music in nearby Boston, then spent his nineteenth year in further study in London and Paris. He taught for six years in Boston, traveling throughout New England with the Bay State Glee Club. He later lived at Bellow Falls, Vermont, where he organized the New Hampshire and Vermont Musical Association. In 1849 he settled in New York City where he directed the music at the Rutgers Street Church until ill-health caused him to resign in 1851. He became editor of the New York Musical Review and made another trip to Europe in 1852 to collect material for the magazine. in the fall of 1858 his health broke down from overwork and he went south hoping to regain his strength, but died three days after reaching Columbia, South Carolina. He published a number of tune-books, of which the Dulcimer, of New York Collection of Sacred Music, went through a number of editions. His Elements of Musical Composition, 1844, was later issued as the Self-instructor in Musical Composition. S. Ralph Harlow

1885 - 1972 Author of "O young and fearless Prophet" in The Hymnal of the Evangelical Mission Covenant Church of America Born: July 20, 1885, Boston, Massachusetts. Died: August 21, 1972, Northampton, Massachusetts. Buried: Abels Hill Cemetery (also known as Chilmark Cemetery), Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Harlow attended Harvard University, Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University, & Hartford Theological Seminary. Ordained a Congregational minister in 1912, he was a chaplain and sociology teacher at the International College in Smyrna, Turkey (1912-22). When World War I broke out, he served as YMCA director for the American forces in France. In 1923, he joined Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, serving over 30 years as a professor of religion and social ethics. He traveled overseas as a lecturer for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and was a visiting professor at Pierce College in Athens, Greece (1945-46). --www.hymntime.com/tch

Minot J. Savage

1841 - 1918 Person Name: M. J. S. Author of "O star of Truth, down shining" in Sacred Songs For Public Worship Savage, Minot Judson, D.D., was born at Norridgewock, Maine, June 10, 1841, and educated at Bangor Seminary, where he graduated in 1864. From 1867 to 1873 he was a Congregational Minister, and then he joined the Unitarians, and has now (1900) a charge in Boston. He has published several works, including Poems, Boston, 1882. He also edited, with H. M. Dow, Sacred Songs for Public Worship, Boston, 1883, to which he contributed 46 original hymns. In hymnals other than this, of his hymns the following are in common use:— 1. Dost thou hear the bugle sounding. Consecration to Duty. 2. Father, we would not dare to change Thy purpose, &C. Prayer. 3. 0 God Whose law is in the sky.
