A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther; Frederick Henry Hedge Hymnal: Glory to God #275 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Scripture: Psalm 91:2 Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe. His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he. Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him. His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure. One little word shall fell him. 4 That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth. The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also. The body they may kill; God's truth abideth still. His kingdom is forever. Our present help amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. . Alleluia, alleluia! 2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear their one true light. Alleluia, alleluia! 3 O may thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them, the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, alleluia! 4 O blest communion! fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia! alleluia! 5 And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph-song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia! alleluia! 6 The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest; sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia! alleluia! 7 But lo! There breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array: the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, alleluia. 8 From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia. Beneath the cross of Jesus

Author: Elizabeth C. Clephane, 1830-1869 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #65 (2000) Meter: 7.6.8.6.8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 91:6 Lyrics: 1 Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land; a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, from burning heart at noontide and the burden of the day. 2 O safe and happy shelter! O refuge tried and sweet! O trysting place where heaven's love and heaven's justice meet! As to the holy patriarch that wondrous dream was given, so seems my Saviour's cross to me a ladder up to heav'n. 3 There lies, beneath its shadow but on the farther side, the darkness of an awful grave that gapes both deep and wide; and there between us stands the cross, two arms outstretched to save; a watchman set to guard the way from that eternal grave. 4 Upon that cross of Jesus mine eyes at times can see the very dying form of One who suffered there for me; and from my strikes heart, with tears, two wonders I confess - the wonders of redeeming love, and my unworthiness. 5 I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place! I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; content to let the world go by, to reckon gain as loss - my sinful self, my only shame, my glory all - the cross. Topics: Passiontide; Protection; Redemption and Salvation; Year A Proper 11; Year C Proper 21 Languages: English Tune Title: ST CHRISTOPHER
