Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness

Author: Nikolaus Ludwig von Zizendorf; John Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 503 hymnals Topics: Imputation of Righteousness Lyrics: 1 Jesus, thy blood and righteousness my beauty are, my glorious dress; 'midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed, with joy shall I lift up my head. 2 Bold shall I stand in thy great day; for who aught to my charge shall lay? fully absolved through these I am from sin and fear, from guilt and shame. 3 When from the dust of death I rise to claim my mansion in the skies, ev'n then this shall be all my plea, Jesus hath lived, hath died, for me. 4 Jesus, be endless praise to thee, whose boundless mercy hath for me - for me a full atonement made, an everlasting ransom paid. 5 O let the dead now hear thy voice; now bid thy banished ones rejoice; their beauty this, their glorious dress, Jesus, thy blood and righteousness. Scripture: Isaiah 61:10 Used With Tune: GERMANY

Reminders from Israel's History

Appears in 11 hymnals Topics: Anger of God Righteous; Judgments On the Righteous First Line: My people, give ear, attend to my word Lyrics: 1 My people, give ear, attend to my word, In parables new deep truths shall be heard; The wonderful story our fathers made known To children succeeding by us must be shown. 2 Unharmed thro' the sea, where perished their foe, He caused them with ease and safety to go; His holy land gaining, in peace they were brought To dwell in the mountain the Lord's hand had bought. 3 He gave them the land, a heritage fair; The nations that dwelt in wickedness there He drove out before them with great overthrow, And gave to His people the tents of the foe. 4 Again they rebelled and tempted the Lord, Unfaithful they turned to idols abhorred, And God in His anger withdrew from them then, No longer delighting to dwell among men. 5 He gave them to death in battle, although His glory and strength were scorned by the foe; Their young men were fallen, their maidens unwed, Their priests slain in battle, none wept for the dead. 6 Then mercy awoke, the Lord in His might Returned, and his foes were scattered in flight; Again to His people His favor He showed, And chose in Mount Zion to fix His abode. 7 His servant he called, a shepherd of sheep, From tending his flock, the people to keep; So David, their shepherd, with wisdom and might Protected and fed them and led them aright. Scripture: Psalm 78 Used With Tune: STELLA

The Watchful Care of God

Appears in 110 hymnals Topics: The Righteous Honor and Safety of First Line: Unto the hills around do I lift up Lyrics: 1 Unto the hills around do I lift up My longing eyes: O whence for me shall my salvation come, From whence arise? From God the Lord doth come my certain aid, From God the Lord Who heav'n and earth hath made. 2 He will not suffer that thy foot be moved, Safe shalt thou be; No careless slumber shall His eyelids close Who keepeth thee. Behold He sleepeth not, He slumbereth ne'er, Who keepeth Israel in His holy care. 3 Jehovah is Himself thy keeper true; Thy changeless shade Jehovah, evermore on thy right hand, Himself hath made; And thee no sun by day shall ever smite, No moon shall harm thee in the silent night. 4 From ev'ry evil shall He keep thy soul, From ev'ry sin; Jehovah shall preserve thy going out, Thy coming in; Above thee watching, He Whom we adore Shall keep thee henceforth, yea, for evermore. Scripture: Psalm 121 Used With Tune: LUX BEATA

Psalm 37 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 37 hymnals Topics: End of the righteous and wicked First Line: Why should I vex my soul, and fret Lyrics: Why should I vex my soul, and fret To see the wicked rise? Or envy sinners waxing great By violence and lies? As flowery grass, cut down at noon, Before the ev'ning fades, So shall their glories vanish soon In everlasting shades. Then let me make the Lord my trust, And practise all that's good; So shall I dwell among the just, And he'll provide me food. I to my God my ways commit, And cheerful wait his will; Thy hand, which guides my doubtful feet, Shall my desires fulfil. Mine innocence shalt thou display, And make thy judgments known, Fair as the light of dawning day, And glorious as the noon. The meek at last the earth possess, And are the heirs of heav'n; True riches, with abundant peace, To humble souls are giv'n. Rest in the Lord, and keep his way, Nor let your anger rise, Though Providence should long delay To punish haughty vice. Let sinners join to break your peace, And plot, and rage, and foam; The Lord derides them, for he sees Their day of vengeance come. They have drawn out the threat'ning sword, Have bent the murd'rous bow, To slay the men that fear the Lord, And bring the righteous low. My God shall break their bows, and burn Their persecuting darts, Shall their own swords against them turn, And pain surprise their hearts. Scripture: Psalm 37:1-15

Psalm 37 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 38 hymnals Topics: End of the righteous and wicked First Line: Why do the wealthy wicked boast Lyrics: Why do the wealthy wicked boast, And grow profanely bold? The meanest portion of the just Excels the sinner's gold. The wicked borrows of his friends, But ne'er designs to pay; The saint is merciful and lends, Nor turns the poor away. His alms with lib'ral heart he gives Amongst the sons of need; His mem'ry to long ages lives, And blessed is his seed. His lips abhor to talk profane, To slander or defraud; His ready tongue declares to men What he has learned of God. The law and gospel of the Lord Deep in his heart abide; Led by the Spirit and the word, His feet shall never slide. When sinners fall, the righteous stand, Preserved from every snare; They shall possess the promised land, And dwell for ever there. Scripture: Psalm 37:16
