In the Bleak Midwinter

Author: Christina Georgina Rossetti Meter: Irregular Appears in 87 hymnals Topics: The Christian Year Christmas; Angels; Christian Year Christmas; Commitment; God Kingdom, Majesty, Realm; Jesus Christ Birth and Infancy; Worship; Christmas Eve Year A; Christmas 1 Year A; Advent 1 Year B; Advent 3 Year C; Christmas Eve Year C First Line: In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan Lyrics: 1 In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. 2 Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ. 3 Enough for him, whom cherubim worship night and day, a breast full of milk, and a manger full of hay. Enough for him, whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore. 4 What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him -- give my heart. Used With Tune: CRANHAM

O God of Every Nation

Author: William W. Reid, Jr. Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 32 hymnals Topics: Christian Year Advent Lyrics: 1 O God of every nation, Of every race and land, Redeem the whole creation With your almighty hand; Where hate and fear divide us, And bitter threats are hurled, In love and mercy guide us And heal our strife-torn world. 2 From search for wealth and power And scorn of truth and right, From trust in bombs that shower Destruction through the night, From pride of race and nation And blindness to your way, Deliver every nation, Eternal God, we pray. 3 Lord, strengthen all who labor That men may find release From fear of rattling saber, From dread of war's increase; When hope and courage falter, Your still small voice be heard; With faith that none can alter, Your servants undergird. 4 Keep bright in us the vision Of days when war shall cease, When hatred and division Give way to love and peace, Till dawns the morning glorious When brotherhood shall reign, And Christ shall rule victorious O'er all the world's domain. Amen. Scripture: Micah 4:1-4 Used With Tune: LLANGLOFFAN

God the Lord, the king almighty

Author: Christopher Martin Idle (b. 1938) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: Christian Year Advent Lyrics: 1 God the Lord, the King almighty, calls the earth from east to west: shining out from Zion's splendour, city loveliest and best, comes our God! He breaks the silence, robed in burning majesty: 'Gather all my covenant people, bound by sacrifice to me. 2 'Hear me testify against you: listen, Israel, as I speak. I do not require your offerings, sacrifice I do not seek. Mountain birds and meadow creatures, Cattle on a thousand hills, all the beasts are my possession, moving as their maker wills.' 3 God who owns the whole creation needs no gift, no food, no house; bring to him your hearts' thanksgiving- God most high will hear your vows. Trust him in the day of trouble, call to him who will redeem; God will be your strong deliverer, his renown your daily theme. 4 Lies increase and evil prospers; God is silent while men say, 'He has gone-let us forget him', thinking he is false as they. But his word will judge or save us: let us come before his throne, giving thanks, receiving mercy- God's salvation now made known. Scripture: Psalm 50 Used With Tune: HYFRYDOL

Song of Zechariah

Author: Michael Perry Appears in 18 hymnals Topics: Christian Year: Advent First Line: Blessed be the God of Israel Lyrics: RESPONSE Blessed be the God of Israel, who comes to set us free. R Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has come to set the chosen people free. God has raised up for us a mighty Savior from the house of David. Through the holy prophets, God promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us; to show mercy to our forebears, and to remember the holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our ancestor Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship without fear, holy and righteous in God's sight, all the days of our life. R And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give God's people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. R Scripture: Luke 1:68-79 Used With Tune: [MERLE'S TUNE] Text Sources: Luke 1:68-79 (ICET, rev. ELLC, alt.)

Tomorrow Christ Is Coming

Author: Fred Kaan, 1929-2009 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 7 hymnals Topics: Christian Year Advent (First) Lyrics: 1 Tomorrow Christ is coming As yesterday He came; A child is born this moment– We do not know its name. The world is full of darkness, Again there is no room; The symbols of existence Are stable, cross and tomb. 2 Tomorrow will be Christmas, The feast of love divine, But for the nameless millions The star will never shine. Still is the census taken With people on the move; New infants born in stables Are crying out for love. 3 There will be no tomorrows For many a baby born. Good Friday falls on Christmas When life is sown as corn. But Jesus Christ is risen And comes again in bread To still our deepest hunger And raise us from the dead. 4 Our God becomes incarnate In ev'ry human birth. Created in God's image, We must make peace on earth. God will fulfil Love's purpose And this shall be the sign: We shall find Christ among us As woman, child or man. Used With Tune: PASSION CHORALE
