When God First Brought Us Back

Author: Carl P. Daw Jr., b. 1944 Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: Lament Community; Lament General First Line: When God first brought us back from exile Lyrics: 1 When God first brought us back from exile, we were as dazed as those who dream. Then were our mouths brimming with laughter; joy from our lips gushed like a stream. The godless cried in envious wonder, “Look what the Lord has done for them!” Indeed our God has greatly blessed us; rejoice and sing, Jerusalem! 2 Once more, O Lord, restore your people; come with your saving help again, as to the brook beds in the desert you bring the sweet, reviving rain. Let those who sow with tears and sighing sing as they reap and joy proclaim: may those who weep when seed is scattered gather their sheaves and praise your name. Scripture: Psalm 126 Used With Tune: WAYFARING STRANGER

Why Do You Stand So Far Away, O LORD?

Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Laments; Laments Lyrics: 1 Why do you stand so far away, O LORD? Why do you hide yourself in troubled times? In arrogance the wicked trap the poor; they catch the weak in schemes they have devised. 2 The wicked boast about their hearts' desires; the covetous renounce and spurn the LORD. In pride they see no need to seek for aid; in all their thoughts they say, "There is no God." 3 They prosper and in pride ignore your law; at all their foes they only puff in scorn. Within their hearts they think, "I am secure; throughout my life my happiness is sure." 4 Their mouths are filled with oaths and lies and threats; beneath their tongues are evil thoughts and deeds. They lie in ambush near the village street; the innocent they murder and defeat. 5 The helpless one is crushed and trampled down; another victim falls beneath their might. At heart they think, "God has forgotten this; he hides his face, so he will never see." 6 Arise, O LORD, lift up your hand, O God! Do not forget the helpless and the poor. Why do the wicked proudly scoff at God and say, "He will not call me to account"? 7 O God, you note injustice and distress that you may take it all into your hands. The helpless ones commit themselves to you, for you give help to orphans and the poor. 8 O break the wicked evildoers' arm! Seek out the secret sin they try to hide. The LORD is King through all eternity; all sinful ones will perish from his land. 9 LORD, you will hear the longing of the meek; strengthen their hearts, incline your ear to them. You will defend the orphan and the poor that evil ones may terrify no more. Scripture: Psalm 10 Used With Tune: FLENTGE Text Sources: The Book of Psalms for Singing, 1975, alt.

Jesus Calls Us; o'er the Tumult

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander, 1818-1895 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 961 hymnals Topics: Lament Lyrics: 1 Jesus calls us; o'er the tumult of our life's wild, restless sea, day by day his clear voice sounding, saying, "Christian, follow me": 2 As of old Saint Andrew heard it by the Galilean lake, turned from home and toil and kindred, leaving all for Jesus' sake. 3 Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world's golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying, "Christian, love me more." 4 In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, "Christian, love me more than these." 5 Jesus calls us! By your mercy, Savior, may we hear your call, give our hearts to your obedience, serve and love you best of all. Used With Tune: GALILEE

An awakened sinner lamenting his past security

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 23 hymnals Topics: Sinner Lamenting his security First Line: Alas, alas how blind I've been Lyrics: 1 Alas! alas how blind I've been, How little of myself I've seen! Sprotive I sail'd the sensual tide, Thoughtless of God whom I defy'd. 2 I heard of heav'n, I heard of hell, Where bliss and woe eternal dwell; But mock'd the threats of truth divine, And scorn'd the place where angels shine. 3 My angry heart refus'd the blood Of a descending, suffering God; And guilty passion boldly broke The holy law which heav'n had spoke. 4 Th' alluring world control'd my choice, When conscience spoke, I hush'd its voice, Securely laugh'd along the road, Which hapless millions first had trod. 5 Now the almighty God comes near, And makes me shake with awful fear; His terrors all my strength exhaust, My fear grows high, my peace is lost. 6 With keen remorse I feel my wound, And seem to hear the dreadful sound, "Depart from me, thou wretch undone, Go reap thy sin, and fell my frown." 7 Thus ends my mirthful thoughtless life, Fill'd up with folly, guilt and strife; Perhaps I sink to endless pain, Nor hear the voice of joy again.
