(Ashford, Connecticut, April 21, 1769--September 26, 1838, Hartford, Connecticut). Baptist. Son of Rev. David Bolles. Engaged in business until middle life, when he felt the call to preach. Ordained June, 1813. Pastorates at Pleasant Valley, Lyme, Connecticut, 1812-1817; later at Fairfield, Connecticut; Milford, New Hampshire; Marblehead, Massachusetts, and West Bridgewater, Massachusetts. His hymn "Pastor's Prayer in the Study" appears as no. 505 in Select Hymns (Hartford, Conn., 1841), compiled by James H. Linsley and Gustavus F. Davis. The first stanza of the hymn reads: Here, Lord, retired, I bow in prayer. Refresh my soul - my heart prepare To preach thy word with power divine; If it succeed, the praise be thine. Richard C.
