The Death of Jesus Christ, Our Lord

Author: Haquin Spegel, 1645-1714; Olof Olsson, 1841-1900 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 Lyrics: 1 The death of Jesus Christ, our Lord, We celebrate with one accord; It is our comfort in distress, Our heart's sweet joy and happiness. 2 He blotted out with His own blood The judgment that against us stood; For us He full atonement made, And all our debt He fully paid. 3 That this forever true shall be He gives a solemn guarantee: In this His holy Supper here We taste His love so sweet, so near. 4 His Word proclaims and we believe That in this Supper we receive His very body, as He said, His very blood for sinners shed. 5 We dare not ask how this can be, But simply hold the mystery And trust this word where life begins; "Given and shed for all your sins." 6 They who this word do not believe This food unworthily receive, Salvation here will never find-- May we this warning keep in mind! 7 But blest is each believing guest Who in these promises finds rest; For Jesus shall in love remain With all who here His grace obtain. 8 Help us sincerely to believe That we may worthily receive Your Supper and in You find rest. Amen! They who believe are blest. Topics: The Lord's Supper; Maundy (Holy) Thursday Used With Tune: GOTTLOB, ES GEHT NUNMEHR ZU ENDE Text Sources: St. 5 composite authorship

This is the night, dear friends, the night for weeping

Author: Peter Abelard (1079-1142); Richard Lyman Sturch (b. 1936) Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Lyrics: 1 This is the night, dear friends, the night for weeping, when powers of darkness overcome the day, the night the faithful mourn the weight of evil whereby our sins the Son of Man betray. 2 This night the traitor, wolf within the sheepfold, betrays himself into his victim's will; the Lamb of God for sacrifice preparing, sin brings about the cure for sin's own ill. 3 This night Christ institutes his holy supper, blest food and drink for heart and soul and mind; this night injustice joins its hand to treason's, and buys the ransom-price of humankind. 4 This night the Lord by slaves shall be arrested, he who destroys our slavery to sin; accused of crime, to criminals be given, that judgement on the righteous Judge begin. 5 O make us sharers, Saviour, of your Passion, that we may share your glory that shall be; let us pass through these three dark nights of sorrow to Easter's laughter and its liberty. Author: Shirley Erena Murray (b. 1931) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:26 Lyrics: 1 In the name of Christ we gather, in the name of Christ we sing, as we celebrate the promise of your servant's offering, here ordained to lead God's people at the Gospel's beckoning. 2 Sons and daughters of the Spirit, we are called to teach and care, called as were the first disciples, Christ's own ministry to share, and in bread and wine and water sacraments of grace declare. 3 In our preaching, praying, caring may your word spring into life; in our time of doubt and challenge, may its truth affirm belief; and in days of pain and darkness, may it heal our guilt and grief. 4 Word of joy, enlivening Spirit, more than lover, parent, friend, born in Jesus, born in Mary, born in us, that love extend, grow within your chosen servant(s), life of God that has no end! When grief is raw and music goes unheard

Author: Brian Wren (b. 1936) Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Lyrics: 1 When grief is raw and music goes unheard, and thought is numb, we have no polished phrases to recite. In Christ we come to hear the old familiar words: 'I am the resurrection. I am life'. 2 God, give us time for gratitude and tears, and make us free to grieve, remember, honour, and delight. Let love be strong to bear regrets and banish fears: 'I am the resurrection. I am life'. 3 The height and breadth of all that love prepares soars out of time, beyond our speculation and our sight. The cross remains to ground the promise that it bears: 'I am the resurrection. I am life'. 4 All shall be judged, the greatest and the least, and all be loved, till every hurt is healed, all wrong set right. In bread and wine we taste the great homecoming feast, and in the midst of death we are in life. Topics: The Church Celebrates Death and Grieving; Eternal Life; Funerals general; Grief; Jesus Teaching
