William Edwin Evans

1851 - 1915 Person Name: William E. Evans Scripture: 1 Kings 8:22-30 Author of "Come, O Thou God of Grace" in The Hymnal of The Evangelical United Brethren Church Evans, William Edwin, born at Baltimore, July 11, 1851. He is a Minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, has held several pastorates, and has been Chaplain at Randolph-Macon College. Of his verses contributed to various periodicals, "Come, O Thou God of grace" [Dedication of a Place of Worship] is given in the American Methodist Hymnal, 1905. [Rev. L. F. Benson, D.D.] --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907) ======================== Evans, William Edwin, D.D. (July 11, 1851--May 22, 1915). Entering Randolph-Macon College, Virginia, in 1869, he was licensed to preach the following year and joined the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1873, transferring at once to the Virginia Conference. In 1892, after filling various appointments in Virginia, he affiliated with the Protestant Episcopal Church and became rector of the Church of the Advent, Birmingham, Alabama. Edward Miller

1735 - 1807 Person Name: Edward Miller (1731-1807) Scripture: 1 Kings 8:22-30 Adapter of "ROCKINGHAM" in Common Praise (1998) Edward Miller, Born in the United Kingdom. The son of a pavior (stone paver), Miller left home to study music at King's Lynn. He was a flautist in Handel's orchestra. In 1752 he published “Six Solos for the German Flute”. In 1756 he was appointed organist of St. George Minster Doncaster, continuing in that post for 50 years. He also gave pianoforte lessons. He published hymns and sonatas for harpsichord, 16 editions of “The Institues of Music”, “Elegies for Voice & Pianoforte”, and Psalms of David set to music, arranged for each Sunday of the year. That work had over 5000 subscribers. He published his thoughts on performance of Psalmody in the Church of England, addressed to clergy. In 1801 he published the Psalms of Watts and Wesley for use by Methodists, and in 1804 the history and antiques of Doncaster with a map. John Perry

b. 1963 Person Name: Swee Hong Lim Scripture: 1 Kings 8:37-40 Composer of "AI HU" in Voices Together Dr. Swee Hong Lim is the Deer Park Assistant Professor of Sacred Music at Emmanuel College, and the Director of the Master of Sacred Music Program. He also serves as Director of the Chapel for the worship life of Emmanuel College. Before joining Emmanuel on July 1, 2012, Dr. Lim served as an Assistant Professor of Church Music at Baylor University. Prior to his work at Baylor, he served as a Lecturer of Worship, Liturgy, and Music at Trinity Theological College in Singapore. Swee Hong is widely utilized as a leader for global seminars and conferences dealing with sacred music. He currently serves as the Co-Moderator of the Worship Committee for the 10th General Assembly of the World Council of Churches for its meeting in Busan, South Korea (2013), and also served as a member of the Worship Planning Committee for the 2011 Ecumenical Peace Convocation sponsored by the World Council held in Jamaica. From 2008-2010, he chaired the Board of Worship and Music for the Trinity Annual Conference of the Methodist Church in Singapore. Swee Hong holds a PhD in Liturgical Studies from Drew University, where his dissertation won the Helen LePage and William Hale Chamberlain Prize for Outstanding Dissertation. He also holds a Master of Arts in Sacred Music from Perkins School of Theology. He completed his undergraduate work in Church Music at the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music in the Philippines. Swee Hong is well-published in global music, with his monograph, Giving Voice to Asian Christians, especially known among global musicians. He is also a prolific composer of hymnody. Ernest Edwin Ryden

1886 - 1981 Person Name: Ernest E. Ryden (1886-1981) Scripture: 1 Kings 8:22-30 Author of "How Blessed Is This Place" in Common Praise (1998) Ernest Edwin Ryden is a distinguished Lutheran clergyman who has been a life-long student of hymns. At present he is pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church in North Grosvenordale, Connecticut. This is the latest of a long series of services he has rendered in the Lutheran Church. For twenty-seven years he was editor of "The Lutheran Companion," the official organ of the former Augustana Lutheran Church. His contributions to hymnody were many. He was a member of the Committee which created the Augustana Hymnal of 1925 to which he contributed eight original hymns and translations. He was co-editor of the Junior Hymnal for which he wrote a number of hymns. He was secretary of the committee which prepared the Service Book and Hymnal. Here again he has contributed new hymns and translations. He is the author of two volumes, "The Story of Our Hymns," and "The Story of Christian Hymnody." In 1949 he was made a Knight of the Royal Order of the North Star by the King of Sweden for his work in the field of hymnological research. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.
