I cannot tell

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Appears in 36 hymnals Topics: Year B Advent 3 First Line: I cannot tell how he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wand'rer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, ev'ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when ev'ry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n and heav'n to earth, will answer: 'At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Scripture: Isaiah 40:5 Used With Tune: LONDONDERRY AIR

Lær mig i Ordet mig flittig at øve, Inderlig bede og Aanderne prøve! 6 Jesus, giv Seier, og lær mig at vaage, Som du, min Vægter, ei sov paa din Vagt! Lad mig i Bønnen din Forbøns Kraft smage, Som du saa dyre mig haver tilsagt!

Songs of Thankfulness and Praise

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 135 hymnals Topics: Advent 3 Year B Lyrics: 1 Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus Christ, to you we raise, manifested by the star, to the sages from afar; branch of royal David's stem in your birth at Bethlehem; anthems be to you addressed God in flesh made manifest. 2 Manifest at Jordan's stream, Prophet, Priest and King supreme; and at Cana wedding-guest in your Godhead manifest; manifest in power divine, changing water into wine: anthems be to you addressed God in flesh made manifest. 3 Manifest in making whole palsied limbs and fainting soul; manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil's might; manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill: anthems be to you addressed God in flesh made manifest. 4 Grant us grace to see you, Lord, mirrored in your holy Word; with your grace our lives endow, grace to imitate you now, that we like to you may be at your great epiphany; anthems be to you addressed God in flesh made manifest. In the Bleak Midwinter

Author: Christina Georgina Rossetti Meter: Irregular Appears in 94 hymnals Topics: Advent 3 Year C First Line: In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan Lyrics: 1 In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. 2 Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ. 3 Enough for him, whom cherubim worship night and day, a breast full of milk, and a manger full of hay. Enough for him, whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore. 4 What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him -- give my heart. Used With Tune: CRANHAM
