Author: John Chandler, 1806-1876 Meter: 8.6.8.8.6 Appears in 57 hymnals Topics: Justification; Justification First Line: O Christ, our hope, our hearts' desire Lyrics: 1 O Christ, our hope, our heart's desire, Creation's mighty Lord, Redeemer of the fallen world, By holy love out-poured, By holy love out-poured: 2 How vast your mercy to accept The burden of our sin, And bow your head in cruel death To make us clean within, To make us clean within. 3 But now the bonds of death are burst, The ransom has been paid; You now ascend the Father's throne In robes of light arrayed, In robes of light arrayed. 4 Oh, let your mighty love prevail To purge us of our pride, That we may stand before Your throne By mercy purified, By mercy purified. 5 Christ Jesus, be our present joy, Our future great reward; Our only glory, may it be To glory in the Lord! 6 All praise to you, ascended Lord; All glory ever be To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost Through all eternity! Used With Tune: LOBT GOTT, IHR CHRISTEN Text Sources: Latin hymn, c. 8th cent.

Awaked by Sinai's awful sound

Author: Ockum Appears in 275 hymnals Topics: The Christian System Justification By Faith Lyrics: 1 Awaked by Sinai's awful sound, My soul in guilt and thrall I found, Exposed to endless woe; Eternal truth did loud proclaim The sinner must be born again, Or else to ruin go. 2 Amazed I stood, but could not tell Which way to shun the gates of hell; For death and hell drew near. I strove, indeed, but strove in vain-- The sinner must be born again, Still sounded in my ear. 3 The saints I heard, with rapture tell, How Jesus conquered death and hell, And broke the fowler's snare; Yet when I found this truth remain-- The sinner must be born again-- I sunk in deep despair. 4 But while I thus in anguish lay, Jesus of Naz'reth passed that way-- I felt his pity move; The sinner, by his justice slain, Now, by his grace, is born again, And sings redeeming love.

Christ is risen! Christ will come again! 2 Made sacred by long use, New-minted for our time, Our liturgies sum up The hope we have in him: [Refrain] 3 On this we fix our minds As, kneeling side by side, We take the bread and wine From him, the Crucified: [Refrain] 4 By this we are upheld When doubt and grief assails Our Christian fortitude, And only grace avails: [Refrain] 5 This is the threefold truth Which, if we hold it fast, Changes the world and us And brings us home at last.

12 Doch ich will ihn halten.

Before the Throne of God Above

Author: Charitie Lees DeCheney Bancroft, 1841-1923 Appears in 61 hymnals Topics: Justification Lyrics: 1 Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea; a great High Priest whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, my name is written on his heart. I know that while in heav'n he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart, no tongue can bid me thence depart. 2 When Satan tempts me to despair and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look and see him there who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God the just is satisfied to look on him and pardon me, to look on him and pardon me. 3 Behold him there, the risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless righteousness, the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace. At one with him, I cannot die; my soul is purchased by his blood. My life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Savior and my God, with Christ my Savior and my God. Scripture: Hebrews 4:14-16 Used With Tune: BEFORE THE THRONE

Human righteousness insufficieint to justify

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 98 hymnals Topics: Scripture Doctrines and Blessings Justification; Justification First Line: Wherewith O Lord, shall I draw near Lyrics: 1 Wherewith, O Lord, shall I draw near, Or bow myself before thy face? How in thy purer eyes appear? What shall I bring to gain thy grace? 2 Will gifts delight the Lord most high? Will multiply'd oblations please? Thousands of rams his favor buy, Or slaughter'd hecatombs appease. 3 Can these assuage the wrath of God? Can these wash out my guilty stain? Rives of oil, or seas of blood, Alas! they all must flow in vain. 4 What have I then wherein to trust? I nothing have, I nothing am; Excluded is my ev'ry boast, My glory swallow'd up in shame. 5 Guilty, I stand before thy face; My sole desert, is hell and wrath; 'Twere just the sentence should take place, But O, I plead my Savior's death! 6 I plead the merits of thy son Who died for sinners on the tree; I plead his righteousness alone, O put the spotless robe on me. Scripture: Micah 6:6-8
