John Otis Barrows

1833 - 1918 Person Name: Rev. John Otis Barrows Author of "O Christ to Thee I Live" in Songs of the Kingdom John Otis Burrows was born on August 4, 1833 in Mansfield, Conn. His father was a farmer and John helped on the farm until he was 21 years old. He had a desire to go to college so he taught for two years at Kimball Union Academy, at Meriden NH during the school year and worked on the farm during his vacations. He then entered Amherst, graduating in 1860 with a B.A. He then studied divinity at East-Windsor Hill, Conn. for one year and at Andover Theological Seminary for two years. He worked as a pastor in New Hampshire for six years, then traveled with his family to Cesarea in Asia Minor as a missionary with the American Board and after six or seven years worked in Constantinople for three or four years before returning to the United States. A illness in the family prevented them from going back overseas. Rev. Burrows returned to pastorates in Atkinson, NH and Newington, Conn. He wrote On Horseback in Cappadocia and In the Land of Ararat: a sketch of the life of Mrs. Elizabeth Freeman Barrows Ussher, Missionary to Turkey and a Martyr of the Great War, a book about the life of his daughter (who was married to physician, Clarence Ussher). 1849 - 1903 Person Name: Ida W. Benham Author of "There's No Other Friend Like Jesus" in The Cyber Hymnal Ida Whipple Benham, peace advocate, born in a farmhouse in Ledyard, Conn., January 9, 1849. She is a daughter of Timothy and Lucy Ann Geer Whipple, and comes from a Quaker family. At an early age she began to write verses. At the age of thirteen years she taught a country school. She was married April 14, 1869, to Elijah B. Benham, of Groton, Conn. She was early made familiar with the reforms advocated by the Quakers, such as temperance, anti-slavery, and the abolition of war. She has lectured on peace and temperance. She was a director fo the American Peace Society, and a member of the executive committee of theUniversal Peace Union. She takes a conspicuous part in the large pece conventions held annually in Mystic, Conn., and she held a monthly peace meeting in her own home in Msytic. She has contributed pomes to the New York "Independent," the Chicago "Advance," the "Youth's Companion," "St.Nicholas" and other prominent periodicals.
