Give praise and thanks unto the Lord

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 106 Lyrics: 1 Give praise and thanks unto the Lord, for bountiful is he; his tender mercy doth endure unto eternity. 2 God’s mighty works who can express? or show forth all his praise? 3 Blessed are they that judgment keep, and justly do always. 4 Remember me, Lord, with that love which thou to thine dost bear; with thy salvation, O my God, to visit me draw near: 5 that I thy chosen’s good may see, and in their joy rejoice; And may with thine inheritance triumph with cheerful voice. 6 We with our fathers sinned have, and of iniquity too long we have the workers been; we have done wickedly. 7 The wonders great, which thou, O Lord, didst work in Egypt land, our fathers, though they saw, yet them they did not understand: And they thy mercies’ multitude kept not in memory; but at the sea, even the Red sea, rebelled most grievously. 8 Nevertheless he saved them, even for his own name’s sake; that so he might to be well known his mighty power make. 9 The Red Sea also he rebuked, and then dried up it was: through depths, as through the wilderness, he safely made them pass. 10 From hands of those that hated them he did his people save; and from the foeman’s cruel hand to them redemption gave. 11 The waters overwhelmed their foes; not one was left alive. 12 Then they believed his word, and praise to him in songs did give. 13 But soon did they his mighty works forget unthankfully, and on his counsel and his will did not wait patiently; 14 They lusted in the wilderness, in desert God did tempt. 15 He gave them what they sought, but to their soul he leanness sent. 16 They envied Moses in the camp and grudged his rule to see, Aaron, Jehovah's hole one, they viewed with jealousy. 17 Therefore the earth did open wide, and Dathan did devour, and all Abiram’s company did cover in that hour. 18 Likewise among their company a fire was kindled then; and so the hot consuming flame burnt up these wicked men. 19 Upon the hill of Horeb they an idol-calf did frame, a molten image they did make, and worshipped the same. 20 And changed the High and Holy One, who all their glory was, into the likeness of an ox that feedeth upon grass. 21 They did forget the mighty God, who had their saviour been, by whom such great things brought to pass they had in Egypt seen. 22 In the land of Ham wrought signs, things terrible did he, when he his mighty hand and arm stretched out at the Red sea. 23 Then said he, he would them destroy, had not, his wrath to stay, his chosen Moses stood in breach, that them he should not slay. 24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, believed not his word: 25 but in their tents they murmured, not hearkening to the Lord. 26 To slay them in the desert then he lifted up his hand: 27 ’mong nations to o’erthrow their seed, and scatter in each land. 28 They unto Baal-peor did themselves associate; the sacrifices of the dead they impiously ate. 29 Thus by inventions of their own they did provoke his ire; and then upon them suddenly the plague brake in as fire. 30 Then Phinehas stood up and judged, and so the plague did cease; 31 to ages all this counted was to him for righteousness. 32 And at the waters, where they strove, they did him angry make, in such sort, that it fared ill with Moses for their sake: 33 because against his spirit they rebelled most grievously, so that he uttered with his lips words unadvisedly. 34 Nor, as the Lord commanded them, did they the nations slay 35 but with the heathen mingled were, and learned of them their way. 36 their idols they did serve, and these became to them a snare; 37 they unto demons sacrifices their sons and daughters there. 38 In their own children’s guiltless blood their hands they did imbrue, whom to Canaan’s idols they for sacrifices slew: so was the land defiled with blood. 39 Stained by their works were they and by inventions of their own they wantonly did stray. 40 For this against his people burned the anger of the Lord; and he his own inheritance in righteousness abhorred. 41 He gave them to the heathen’s power; their foes did them command: 42 their enemies them oppressed, they were made subject to their hand. 43 He many times delivered them, yet still they did rebel with counsels vain, and by their sin into destruction fell. 44 Yet their affliction he beheld, when he did hear their cry: 45 and he for them his covenant did call to memory; After his mercies’ multitude 46 he did repent, and make them to be pitied of all those who did them captive take. 47 Save, Lord our God, and gather us the heathen from among, that we thy holy name may praise in a triumphant song. 48 Blessed be Jehovah, Israel’s God, to all eternity: let all the people say, Amen. Praise to the Lord give ye. Used With Tune: DUNFERMLINE

God of eternal love

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.CVI.II (1816) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 106 Lyrics: 5 God of eternal love, How fickle are our ways! And yet how oft did Isra'l prove Thy constancy of grace! 6 They saw thy wonders wrought, And then thy praise they sung; But soon thy works of pow'r forgot, And murmur'd with their tongue. 7 Now they believe his word, While rocks with rivers flow; Now with their lusts provoke the Lord, And he reduc'd them low. 8 Yet when they mourn'd their faults, He hearken'd to their groans; Brought his own cov'nant to his thoughts, And call'd them still his sons. 9 Their names were in his book, He sav'd them from their foes; Oft he chastis'd, but ne'er forsook The people that he chose. 10 Let Isra'l bless the Lord, Who loved their ancient race; And Christians join the solemn word, Amen to all the praise. Annabeth McClelland Gay

1925 - 2020 Scripture: Psalm 106 Composer of "SHEPHERDS' PIPES" in Christian Worship Annabeth McClelland Gay was born in 1925 in Ottawa, Illinois, where her father was the pastor of the Presbyterian church. She was educated at Knox College (B.M.E. 1947) and Union Theological Seminary's School of Sacred Music, New York City(M.S.M. 1949). She has been choir director in the various churches her husband has served as pastor. The tune SHEPHERDS' PIPES was written by Annabeth McClelland Gay in 1952 as the setting for "The Lord Is Rich and Merciful" in the Pilgrim Hymnal (1958). Every Christmas, the Gays sent an original Christmas song to their friends. In 1952 it was Annabeth's turn to compose the music for which her husband would supply the words. "This tune 'dropped out of the blue' one evening while I was at the piano. Bill said, 'Sounds like shepherd pipes,' and ran for the Bible dictionary to see if such were used by the shepherds in Palestine, and the hymn tune was born.“ --www.firstpresbyterianfairborn.org/lifeline Annabeth McClelland Gay, 95, Lincoln, died 29 April 2020 at Eastmont Towers. Annabeth was born on 18 April 1925 to the Rev. Charles McClelland and Barbara Nessen McClelland in Ottawa, IL. She was the Valedictorian of her high school class and went to Knox College in Galesburg, IL, graduating in 1947 (Phi Beta Kappa) with a degree in music, specializing in voice and organ. She then attended Union Theological Seminary in New York, graduating in 1949 with a Master's Degree in Sacred Music. It was at Union that she met William Gay, her husband of 60 years. They married in 1949 and spent 40 years serving U.C.C. churches together in rural Ohio. During this time, she was very active in leading church music workshops throughout Ohio and adjoining states. She also gave uncountable organ, piano, and voice lessons to young and old. Annabeth was, above all, a hymnodist. With William, she composed a Christmas song or hymn every year that they sent to family and friends. Several of these were widely published and one, “Carol of Hope,” has been included in a wide variety of hymnals. Annabeth is survived by her son Timothy (Chris) of Lincoln, a brother, the Rev. Robert McClelland of St. Louis, MO, two grandsons, Frederick (Sara) of Ft. Worth, TX, and Bertram (Stacey Rickers) of Culver City, CA, and two great-grandaughters, Harriet and Beatrice, of Ft. Worth. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Charlotte Petersen. Memorial gifts may be made to the U.C.C. Mission Boards through First Plymouth Church or to Eastmont Towers, Lincoln. A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced.
