J. Jefferson Cleveland

1937 - 1986 Person Name: J. Jefferson Cleveland, 1937- Harmonizer of "[He's got the whole world in His hands]" in Songs of Zion Judge Jefferson Cleveland (1937-1986) was one of the most important scholars and editors of African-American congregational song of the 20th century. Along with Verogla Nix, he edited what is arguably the most groundbreaking collection of African-American song in the last half of the 20th century, Songs of Zion (1981/1982). Lutheran hymnologist Marilyn Stulken provides a biographical sketch of Cleveland’s life and accomplishments. Born in Georgia, Cleveland graduated from Clark College (Atlanta), Illinois Wesleyan University and received his doctorate in education from Boston University. He served on the faculty of three historically black Christian colleges: Claflin College (South Carolina), Langston University (Oklahoma), and Jarvis Christian College (Texas), before teaching at the University of Massachusetts and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Cleveland’s musical arrangements, historical research and scholarship on the performance practice of African-American song have proven invaluable for the advancement of black gospel song, not only among African Americans, but also in Anglo hymnals to the present day. For example, Cleveland’s essay, “A Historical Account of the Hymn in the Black Worship Experience,” in Songs of Zion is a helpful introduction for laypersons and scholars alike. In addition to serving as a hymnody consultant for the United Methodist General Board of Discipleship, he toured the United States and Africa in 1981 and Europe in 1984 as a teacher, lecturer and performer. --www.umportal.org/

Albert E. Brumley

1905 - 1977 Arranger of "WHOLE WORLD (Brumley)" in Radio Favorites Born: October 29, 1905, near Spiro, Oklahoma. Died: November 15, 1977, Springfield, Missouri. Buried: Fox Cemetery, Powell, Missouri. Brumley attended the Hartford Musical Institute in Hartford, Arkansas, and sang with the Hartford Quartet. He went on to teach at singing schools in the Ozarks, and lived most of his life in Powell, Missouri. He worked for 34 years a staff writer for the Hartford and Stamps/Baxter publishing companies, then founded the Albert E. Brumley & Sons Music Company and Country Gentlemen Music, and bought the Hartford Music Company. Person Name: Anon Author of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" in Praise Ways In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

1932 - 2008 Person Name: Harold DeCou Arranger of "[He’s got the whole wide world in His hands]" in Favorites Number 5 Peoria - Harold H. DeCou, 76, of Peoria died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at his residence. He was born Oct. 7, 1932, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Harold H. and Kathrine Holbrook DeCou. He married Rose N. Layman on June 25, 1955, in Brookfield, Ill. She survives. Also surviving are his four sons, Harold H. (Nancy) DeCou III of Apple Valley, Calif., Mark T. DeCou of Peoria, Jonathan (Shari) DeCou of Muskegon, Mich., and Perry A. (Suiann) DeCou of Ramona, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia. He was a concert artist (piano and organ), composer, arranger and orchestrator for 58 years. He served as church organist at Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria from 1988 to 2001. He was a member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Peoria. He is also an Honorary Fellow of Shenandoah Society Award. … Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria. … Memorials may be made to Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
