R. G. Staples

b. 1833 Composer of "[In that far distant land where the angels of light]" in Fount of Blessing Robert Griffin Staples. He was born Robert Griffin on January 24, 1833 in Washington DC. Both of his parents died in a carriage accident when he was an infant; he was then adopted by his mother's sister, Mary Ann King, and her husband, Samuel Johnson Staples and he was given the name Robert Griffin Staples. He was a captain in the Union Army during the Civil War and after the war was promoted to Major. He then worked as chief clerk in the Portsmouth United States Navy Yard. Religion was an important part of his life, as well as music. He died June 20, 1891 in Portsmouth, VA. Dianne Shapiro, from Jean Brickey (great-granddaughter)

Horace H. Hawley

1817 - 1904 Person Name: Horace Harlow Hawley Composer of "AHRWEILER" in The Cyber Hymnal Hawley, H. H., author of "There is a hope, a blessed hope" [Hope in Christ], which appeared in A. C. Thomas's Hymns of Zion, 1839, was born in Lewis County, New York, April 10, 1817. In 1881 he published The Iris; Songs of Jesus for Sunday Schools and Devotional Meetings, to which he contributed seven hymns. The music of this collection is mainly by Mr. Hawley. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907) ============================ Hawley, Horace H. (Lewis County, New York, April 10, 1817--?). Baptist. Associated with Bennett, Backus, and Hawley and other bookselling firms in Utica, N.Y. Became secretary of the Aetna Insurance Company in Utica in 1852. Moved to Hartford, Connecticut, shortly thereafter and to Burlington, Iowa, in 1856. Operated a music and book store as well as an insurance agency there. He is listed in the Burlington city directory as late as 1872. In Burrage's Baptist Hymn Writers and Their Hymns, it is noted that his health became impaired that year and he moved to southwestern Wisconsin. Carlos Swift

b. 1829 Author of "Rejoicing In Hope" in The Cyber Hymnal Swift, Carlos. (Fabius, Onondaga County, New York, January 12, 1829--?). Baptist. Educated at Pompey Academy, Union College, and Madison University. Pastorates at Clinton, N.Y., 1851-1854; Waterville, N.Y., 1854-1857; Madison, N.Y., 1857-1861; Mount Carroll, Illinois, 1861-1863; Normal, Ill., 1863-1864; Aurora, Ill., 1864; Comanche, Iowa, 1864-1866; Chicago, Ill., 1866-1870. Two hymns by Swift are included in The Iris, Songs of Jesus for Sunday Schools and Devotional Meetings, compiled by H.H. Hawley. One of these is a Christmas hymn. The other is entitled "Rejoicing in Hope" and begins "In that far distant land where the angels of light/Are resplendent with glory no mortal hath known." --Alan Wingard, DNAH Archives
