Hutchins was the Rector of Grace Church, Medford, Mass., and was for many years Secretary of the House of Deputies of General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S.A. In addition, he published in 1872 Annotations of the Hymnal: Consisting of Notes, Biographical Sketches of Authors, Originals and References (the only predecessor to the Companion to the 1940 Hymnal). --The Hymnal 1940 Companion (New York: The Church Pension Fund 1949).
