36. In Every Thing Give Thanks

1 The lesson is hard for our learning,
When tempted to pine and to grieve,
Yet God never gave us a portion,
But gratefully we should receive.

Chorus:
Give thanks O my brother,
Life’s trials all through,
Our blessings are many,
Our sorrows are few.

2 We linger so long with our trials,
And live our perplexities o’er;
We might be more earnestly thankful,
If counting our joys by the score. [Chorus]

3 God gives us so many good blessings,
So few little trials to bear;
We only take note of our troubles,
And magnify every care. [Chorus]

4 Each pang holds a gift for our grasping,
If only its lessons we learn;
In ev’ry affliction, the, brother,
The incense of gratefulness burn. [Chorus]
