Hail to the Lord's anointed

Author: James Montgomery (1771-1854) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 842 hymnals Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 Lyrics: 1 Hail to the Lord's anointed, great David's greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, to take away transgression, and rule in equity. 2 He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth. Before him on the mountains shall peace the herald go, and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow. 4 Kings shall fall down before him, and gold and incense bring; all nations shall adore him, his praise all people sing. To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend, his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. 5 O'er every foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest, from age to age more glorious, all-blessing and all-blest. The tide of time shall never his covenant remove. His name shall stand for ever: that name to us is Love. Topics: Adoration; Advent; Covenant; Epiphany (feast); Kingdom Used With Tune: CRÜGER

Sweet is the work, my God, my King

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 778 hymnals Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:23 Lyrics: 1 Sweet is the work, my God, my King, to praise thy name, give thanks and sing, to show thy love by morning light, and talk of all thy truth at night. 2 Sweet is the day of sacred rest, no mortal cares disturb my breast; O may my heart in tune be found, like David's harp of solemn sound! 3 My heart shall triumph in the Lord, and bless his works, and bless his word; thy works of grace, how bright they shine, how deep thy counsels, how divine! 4 And I shall share a glorious part, when grace has well refined my heart, and fresh supplies of joy are shed, like holy oil, to cheer my head. 5 Then shall I see and hear and know all I desired or wished below; and every power find sweet employ in that eternal world of joy. Topics: Proper 4 Year B; Proper 6 Year B; Funerals, Commemoration, Remembrance and All Souls Used With Tune: DEEP HARMONY
