Let All the World Rejoice

Author: John Hunt Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #8 (1985) Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Let all the world rejoice, the Lord almighty reigns; the thunders are his voice, our life his will ordains: unequalled, sov'reign and alone in majesty he fills his throne. 2 Glad was the angel throng to see his might prevail; they sang their joyful song the universe to hail; while yet in radiant youth it stood, th'eternal Word pronounced it good. 3 The heav'ns and earth he made by his prevailing might; his eye all things surveyed, he scattered ancient night, and heav'n and earth and sky and sea proclaimed his glorious majesty. 4 But this fair world shall die, the creature of a day, in cooling ashes lie, its glory passed away; the pride and glory of the earth shall be as ere they had their birth. 5 Yet ever fixed the throne of the eternal One shall stand when earth is gone, and time its race has run. New worlds his power can make at will, new creatures can his praise fulfill. 6 The outskirts of his ways appear to mortal sight; the fullness of his praise exceeds an angel's flight; but here is truth all truth above: mortals may bless immortal love. Let All The World Rejoice

Author: John Hunt, 1812-1848 Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #10612 Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Let all the world rejoice, The great Jehovah reigns; The thunders are His voice, Our life His will ordains; The glories of His mighty name The lightnings, floods, and hail proclaim. 2 He rules by sea and land, O’er boundless realms His sway; He governs coral strand, And mountains homage pay; Unequalled, sovereign, and alone, In majesty He fills His throne. 3 The universe He made By His prevailing might; The earth’s foundations laid, And scattered ancient night; When Heaven and earth, the sky and sea, Proclaimed His awful majesty. 4 When first the orb of day Gleamed forth with ruddy light, And moon with silver ray Marched up the vault of night, The stars bedecked the sparkling skies That seemed creation’s thousand eyes. 5 And earth’s fair form was seen, With flowers and blossoms dressed; And trees and meadows green Adorned her youthful breast; He hung them out in boundless space, Amid the ocean’s cool embrace. 6 Glad was the angel throng To see His might prevail, And sang loud, joyful song, This universe to hail; They saw it as in youth it stood, And heard its Maker call it good. 7 But this fair world shall die, The creature of a day; In ash and ruin lie, Its glory passed away; And as she was before her birth, Again shall be this mighty earth. 8 Soon shall the day be o’er, Of yonder brilliant sun; To rise and set no more, His race of glory run; And soon, alas! Yes, all too soon Shall fade the stars, and yon pale moon. But ever fixed, the throne Of the Eternal One Shall stand, creation gone, Unchanging, He rules on; New worlds to make with sovereign will, And His own wise designs fulfill. John Hunt

b. 1827 Author of "Let All the World Rejoice" in Rejoice in the Lord Hunt, John, D.D., was born at Bridgend, Perth, Jan. 21, 1827, and educated at the University of St. Andrews (D.D. 1878). In 1855 he was ordained to the curacy of Deptford, Sunderland. He held several curacies to 1878, when he became vicar of Oxford, near Sevenoaks. He was for some time on the staff of the Contemporary Review. He has published Select Poems, 1852, being translations from Goethe, Schiller, and other German poets. Also The Spiritual Songs of Martin Luther, 1853. These Songs are noted in this Dictionary under their first lines in German. Very few of them have come into common use. This volume also contains hymns founded on the German of Zinzendorf and others. The versions, however, are very free, and, at Dr. Hunt's suggestion, are not noted in detail in this Dictionary. [Rev. James Mearns, M.A.] --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)
