Author of "See the Shining Dewdrops" in Our Hymns of Praise In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

J. H. Fillmore

1849 - 1936 Person Name: J. H. F. Composer of "[See the shining dewdrops]" in Heart Songs James Henry Fillmore USA 1849-1936. Born at Cincinnati, OH, he helped support his family by running his father's singing school. He married Annie Eliza McKrell in 1880, and they had five children. After his father's death he and his brothers, Charles and Frederick, founded the Fillmore Brothers Music House in Cincinnati, specializing in publishing religious music. He was also an author, composer, and editor of music, composing hymn tunes, anthems, and cantatas, as well as publishing 20+ Christian songbooks and hymnals. He issued a monthly periodical “The music messsenger”, typically putting in his own hymns before publishing them in hymnbooks. Jessie Brown Pounds, also a hymnist, contributed song lyrics to the Fillmore Music House for 30 years, and many tunes were composed for her lyrics. He was instrumental in the prohibition and temperance efforts of the day. His wife died in 1913, and he took a world tour trip with single daughter, Fred (a church singer), in the early 1920s. Alfred Ernest Whitehead

1887 - 1974 Person Name: Alfred Whitehead Composer of "WELLARD" in The Hymnary Whitehead, Alfred. (Peterborough, England, July 10, 1887--April 1, 1974, Amherst, Nova Scotia). Anglican. A.R.C.O., 1909; University of Toronto, Mus.Bac., 1916; McGill University (Montreal), Mus.Doc., 1922; F.R.C.O., 1924. Organist, Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal, 1922-1947; dean of music, Mount Allison University (Sackville, New Brunswick), 1947-1953. He composed over 400 works for organ and for choir, occasionally writing for the latter lyrics which proved equally suitable for congregational singing. E. O. Excell

1851 - 1921 Composer of "[See the shining dewdrops]" in Triumphant Songs No.1 Edwin Othello Excel USA 1851-1921. Born at Uniontown, OH, he started working as a bricklayer and plasterer. He loved music and went to Chicago to study it under George Root. He married Eliza Jane “Jennie” Bell in 1871. They had a son, William, in 1874. A member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, he became a prominent publisher, composer, song leader, and singer of music for church, Sunday school, and evangelistic meetings. He founded singing schools at various locations in the country and worked with evangelist, Sam Jones, as his song leader for two decades. He established a music publishing house in Chicago and authored or composed over 2,000 gospel songs. While assisting Gypsy Smith in an evangelistic campaign in Louisville, KY, he became ill, and died in Chicago, IL. He published 15 gospel music books between 1882-1925. Joseph Haydn

1732 - 1809 Person Name: Haydn Composer of "[See the shining dewdrops]" in Sacred Songs for Little Singers Franz Joseph Haydn (b. Rohrau, Austria, 1732; d. Vienna, Austria, 1809) Haydn's life was relatively uneventful, but his artistic legacy was truly astounding. He began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, spent some years in that city making a precarious living as a music teacher and composer, and then served as music director for the Esterhazy family from 1761 to 1790. Haydn became a most productive and widely respected composer of symphonies, chamber music, and piano sonatas. In his retirement years he took two extended tours to England, which resulted in his "London" symphonies and (because of G. F. Handel's influence) in oratorios. Haydn's church music includes six great Masses and a few original hymn tunes. Hymnal editors have also arranged hymn tunes from various themes in Haydn's music. Bert Polman
