O For a Heart to Praise My God

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Hymnal: African Methodist Episcopal Church Hymnal #20 (2011) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 O for a heart to praise my God! A heart from sin set free; A heart that always feels Thy blood, So freely shed for me; 2 A heart resigned, submissive, meek, My great Redeemer's throne, Where only Christ is heard to speak, Where Jesus reigns alone; 3 A humble, lowly, contrite heart, Believing, true and clean, Which neither life nor death can part From Him that dwells within; 4 A heart in every thought renewed, And full of love divine, Perfect and right and pure and good, A copy, Lord, of Thine! 5 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart; Come quickly from above; Write Thy new name upon my heart, Thy new, best name of Love. Amen. Topics: Worship and Praise Adoration; Adoration; Peace; Walking with God Scripture: Psalm 51:10 Languages: English Tune Title: BEATITUDO

Joseph Haydn

1732 - 1809 Person Name: Haydn Composer of "MANOAH" in Songs of Praise and Delight Franz Joseph Haydn (b. Rohrau, Austria, 1732; d. Vienna, Austria, 1809) Haydn's life was relatively uneventful, but his artistic legacy was truly astounding. He began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, spent some years in that city making a precarious living as a music teacher and composer, and then served as music director for the Esterhazy family from 1761 to 1790. Haydn became a most productive and widely respected composer of symphonies, chamber music, and piano sonatas. In his retirement years he took two extended tours to England, which resulted in his "London" symphonies and (because of G. F. Handel's influence) in oratorios. Haydn's church music includes six great Masses and a few original hymn tunes. Hymnal editors have also arranged hymn tunes from various themes in Haydn's music. Bert Polman

Anonymous

Person Name: Anon. Composer of "DESERT" in Evangelical Hymnal In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Hans G. Nägeli

1773 - 1836 Person Name: Naegeli (1773-1836) Composer of "NAOMI" in Hymns of the Ages Johann G. Nageli (b. Wetzikon, near Zurich, Switzerland, 1773; d. Wetzikon, 1836) was an influential music educator who lectured throughout Germany and France. Influenced by Johann Pestalozzi, he published his theories of music education in Gangbildungslehre (1810), a book that made a strong impact on Lowell Mason. Nageli composed mainly" choral works, including settings of Goethe's poetry. He received his early instruction from his father, then in Zurich, where he concentrated on the music of. S. Bach. In Zurich, he also established a lending library and a publishing house, which published first editions of Beethoven’s piano sonatas and music by Bach, Handel, and Frescobaldi. Bert Polman
