A Glory Gilds the Sacred Page

Author: William Cowper, 1731-1800 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 387 hymnals Topics: The Holy Scripture Lyrics: 1 A glory gilds the sacred page, Majestic like the sun; It gives a light to every age; It gives, but borrows none. 2 The Hand that gave it still supplies The gracious light and heat; His truths upon the nations rise; They rise, but never set. 3 Let everlasting thanks be Thine For such a bright display, As makes a world of darkness shine With beams of heavenly day. 4 My soul rejoices to pursue The steps of Him I love, Till glory break upon my view In brighter worlds above. AMEN. Used With Tune: BURLINGTON

A glory in the Word we find

Appears in 17 hymnals Topics: Worship Holy Scriptures Lyrics: 1 A glory in the word we find When grace restores our sight; But sin has darkened all the mind, And vailed the heavenly light, And vailed the heavenly light. 2 When God's own Spirit clear our view, How bright the doctrines shine! Their holy fruits and sweetness show The author is divine. 3 How blest are we, with open face To view thy glory, Lord, And all thy image here to trace, Reflected in thy word! 4 O teach us, as we look, to grow In holiness and love, That we may long to see and know Thy glorious face above. A Mighty Fortress

Author: Martin Luther; Frederic Henry Hedge Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Appears in 688 hymnals Topics: Scripture Songs First Line: A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing (Hedge) Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing. You ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same; and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God has willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him. 4 That Word above all earthly powers no thanks to them abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God's truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever! Psalter Hymnal, (Gray), 1987

A Rabbi Sat Against a Wall

Author: Daniel Charles Damon Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Scripture-Based Giving Lyrics: 1 A rabbi sat against a wall and watched the crowd pass by, the wealthy gave great gifts of gold, a widow caught his eye. 2 She gave two copper coins that day, a gift so small and slight. A penny's worth in Palestine was precious in her sight. 3 Our teacher called us to his side and said her gift was small, was greater than the lavish gifts, because she gave her all. 4 The wealthy gave their heavy sums from an abundant store. The widow, in her poverty, had given so much more. Scripture: Mark 12:41-44 Used With Tune: HENSLEY

A Rational Defence of the Gospel

Author: Dr. Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 39 hymnals Topics: Scripture The Gospel First Line: Shall Atheists dare insult the cross Lyrics: 1 Shall Atheists dare insult the cross Of our incarnate God? Shall Infidels revile his truth, And trample on his blood? 2 What if he choose mysterious ways To cleanse us from our faults? May not the works of sovereign grace Transcend our feeble thoughts? 3 What if his gospel bids us strive With flesh, and self, and sin? The prize is most divinely bright That we are call'd to win. 4 What if the men, despis'd on earth, Still of his grace partake? This but confirms his truth the more, For so the prophets spake. 5 Do some that own this sacred truth, Indulge their souls in sin? None should reproach the Savior's name, His laws are pure and clean. 6 Then let our faith be firm and strong, Our lips profess his word; Nor even shun those holy men, Who fear and love the Lord.
