Autumn, or the harvest is the end of the world

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 15 hymnals Topics: Autumn First Line: See how brown autumn spreads the field Lyrics: 1 See how brown autumn spreads the field; Mark how the whit'ning hills are turn'd; Behold them to the reapers yield, The wheat is sav'd, the tares are burn'd. 2 Thus the great Judge with glory crown'd, Descends to reap the ripen'd earth; Angelic guards attend him down, The same who sang his humble birth. 3 In sounds of glory, hear him speak; "Go search around the flaming world, Haste, call my saints, to rise and take The seats from which their foes were hurl'd. 4 "Go burn the chaff in endless fire, In flames unquench'd consume each tare; Sinners must feel my holy ire, And sink in guilt to deep despair." 5 Thus ends the harvest of the earth, Angels obey the awful voice: They save the wheat and burn the chaff, All heav'n approves the sov'reign choice. Scripture: Matthew 13:39

In Sweet Fields of Autumn

Author: Elizabeth Madison, b. 1883 Meter: 12.12.12.12 Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Transcending Mystery and Wonder Autumn First Line: In sweet fields of autumn the gold grain is falling Lyrics: 1 In sweet fields of autumn the gold grain is falling, the white clouds drift lonely, the wild swan is calling. Alas for the daisies, the tall fern and grasses, when wind-sweep and rainfall fill lowlands and passes. 2 The snows of December shall fill windy hollow; the bleak rain trails after, the March wind shall follow. The deer through the valleys leave print of their going; and diamonds of sleet mark the ridges of snowing. 3 The stillness of death shall stoop over the water, the plover sweep low where the pale streamlets falter; but deep in the earth clod the black seed is living; when spring sounds her bugles for rousing and giving. Used With Tune: CRADLE SONG

Now the Day Is Over

Author: Sabine Baring-Gould, 1834-1924; Marye B. Bonney, 1910- Meter: 6.5.6.5 Appears in 973 hymnals Topics: Autumn and Harvest Lyrics: 1 Now the day is over, night is drawing nigh, shadows of the evening steal across the sky. 2 Now the leafless landscape settles in repose, waiting for the quiet of the winter snows. 3 Now as twilight gathers let us pause and hear all the slowing pulse-beats of the waning year. 4 May the season's rhythms, slow and strong and deep, soothe the mind and spirit, lulling us to sleep. 5 Sleep until the rising of another spring keeps the ancient promise fall and winter bring. Used With Tune: WEM IN LEIDENSTAGEN
